No. The story was okay but the reader was distracting. Most of the action scenes were really far-fetched and the main character seemed too robotic. The attempt at humanizing him didn't work.
The voice he used for the main character sounded phony and everything he said had an angry or aggressive tone. No one sounds angry all of the time.
I've read all of the Jonathan Graves books so I was excited when I found there was a new one in the series. While it was an OK story, with a couple of interesting characters, Jonathan Graves played just a minor part of the plot for most of the story. He really only took part in the last hour or so and that definitely wasn't up to Gilstrap's previous standards. The weak ending was disappointing. Still waiting for the next Jonathan Graves mission.
I loved all of the books in the Joe Pickett series and was really excited about being introduced to Cody Hoyt. "Back of Beyond" was great so I started reading "The Highway" immediately afterwards. I wish I hadn't.
While the first half of the book showed the same CJ Box promise, the second half of the book seemed to have been written by someone else. Cassie was a weak character and I simply could not buy how she solved the case. With the end of the story leaving us hanging about the 3rd bad guy, I definitely will not listen to a sequel. Didn't like Cassie from the beginning.
I've pre-ordered the next Joe Pickett book and am looking forward to that but I'm now a little hesitent about other Box books.
I was spending a couple of days driving & wanted something fun and easy to listen to, without the need for a lot of concentration. I got this one because it was free with my Prime membership and ended up listening to the next 2 books as well.
Not a lot of realism going on here but adults need fairytales, too. Glad I got them! Made for a quick trip.
If you're looking for something quick and light-hearted, this is a good choice. Janet Evanovich does it again. And the narration really fit the style of the book. Not a deep, complicated story but it was just what I was looking for a the time. A little escapism.
Don't waste a credit on this one . . . and definitely don't pay $19.++ for it. The name of the series is Elite Ops so, with some romance thrown in, I was looking forward to it. What a mistake.
If you read the synopsis, you've got all the story there is. With almost 16 hours of running time in 2 parts, I couldn't make it through the first one. There was absolutely no believeable mission going on and the supposed "romance" was nothing but graphically descriptive pornography . . . page after page after page.
I can't believe that this was written by a a woman and I'm not sure what she was trying to accomplish but she failed on every measurable level. The narrator had a soft, calm voice which made it even harder to listen . . . the voice DID NOT match the words coming out of her mouth. If they put the real book in the sample, it would be a non-seller.
Another great story. I was bummed when I finished this one. Hope the author is coming up with more John Wells adventures.
I read The Faithful Spy and loved it so I read the entire series in a week. Great characters and a timely story line. Hope the author is going to write another one.
I've read the entire John Wells series and they are all wonderful. Alex Berenson has created a hero that we can't stay away from.
The writing would have to improve A LOT!
The voices seemed to be set up with the wrong characters. The Earl sounded like an old man.
The story was weak and implausible. The heroine was too much of a do-gooder to be believed and the hero seemed too weak to be believed. I wouldn't have thought of him as a spy.
The voice she used for the main female character sounded weak and whiny
Most of them
This story was completely unbelievable. No one who had her cousin go missing would fail to call her family and on what planet would a deputy sheriff refuse to look for a missing person? The story was so bad it was like the author just mixed up a bunch of words and stuck some sex in the middle.
I never stop reading a book in the middle, just in case it's a slow starter but this one was a complete waste of time. Throughout the whole book I just wanted to slap some sense into the characters. Juvenile attempt at writing.
