Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

What made the experience of listening to The Kite Runner the most enjoyable?

I liked the accent of the narrator. It made the book seem very real and authentic.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hassan - clearly! He was such a strong character of unquestionable integrity. Despite all odds, he kept his faith and compassion for others.

What does Khaled Hosseini bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I would not have known how to pronounce many of the names and terms from the Islamic culture that is forein=gn to me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, in fact after the scene where Hassan was abused I put it down, so upset I almost didn't finish the book. I decided to pick it up again a few months later and was so glad I did. As horrifying as some of the events were, there were real and the characters grew in so many ways, as is often the case with adversity in real life.

    Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this book. I feel it gave me an understanding of Muslim beliefs, practices and struggles that I would not have had based on my own upbringing in a loving Catholic American home.

The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Where does Beautiful Ruins rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Not my favorite book, but liked it more at the end.

What other book might you compare Beautiful Ruins to and why?

    Not sure

What does Edoardo Ballerini bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I loved his accents and voices. You can't hear that if you read a book.

If you could take any character from Beautiful Ruins out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would definitely take Pasquale Toursi because I see him as a man of character and virtue. He found the strength to do what was right and stand up against selfish people for the sake of others.

Why we think it’s a great listen: If you’ve ever loved a dog - or even patted a dog - this book, told from the perspective of man’s best friend, will tug at your heartstrings...and won’t let go until long after Welch performs the last word. Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively and by listening very closely to the words of his master.

What did you love best about The Art of Racing in the Rain?

The story reminded me of my son who is much like the lead character, a hard-working man of character, who works on BMWs and loves cars and racing.

What did you like best about this story?

It was so unique to hear the story from Enzo's (the man's dog) point of view - totally unique and inspiring!

Which character – as performed by Christopher Evan Welch – was your favorite?

Denny was my favorite and of course, Enzo.

Who was the most memorable character of The Art of Racing in the Rain and why?

Enzo was the most memorable because he gave us a window into a dog's point of view of our world.

I loved the story about he and his Dad and brother driving somewhere and getting stopped for speeding.

The dust storms that terrorized America's High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression were like nothing ever seen before or since, and the stories of the people that held on have never been fully told. Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist and author Timothy Egan follows a half-dozen families and their communities through the rise and fall of the region.

Where does The Worst Hard Time rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    In the top ten

What other book might you compare The Worst Hard Time to and why?

Unbroken - it is a true story about real people and real events.

What about Patrick Lawlor’s performance did you like?

The narrator spoke very clearly and used appropriate pauses and inflections.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did get teary-eyed when the author described the loss of little Georgie and how that affected his parents.

    Any additional comments?

Because of the nature of the subject matter, it made me want to look at pictures of the pople, places and events of that time and place. I wondered if the hard copy includes those - I might have preferred the hard copy for that reason. However, Timothy Egan did a wonderful job of writing descriptions that helped paint a mental picture.

  • Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Would you listen to Unbroken again? Why?

Perhaps, after a while. Although it was a terrific story, it was difficult to hear some of the horrendous conditions Zamperini had to endure.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Unbroken?

Yes, I never cared for history as a child, but as I've gotten older I love learning about real people and their real life hardships and achievements.

Which character – as performed by Edward Herrmann – was your favorite?

Absolutely, Laura Hillenbrand is a very talented writer who wove the story of Louie Zamperini's life from his childhood to athletic achievements, courage in the face of torture, romance and finally, his faith journey in such a way that you really felt like you knew him , his family, friends and comrades. The book opens with a scene that is absolutely riveting and it keeps you enthralled like a good novel!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Nothing I can think of.

    Any additional comments?

This book was so well done it makes me want to look into other books by this author. Bravo!

What did you like best about this story?

It had an eerie similarity to current events in world and national politics and it had a ring of truth to it.

    Which scene was your favorite?

When the team rescued their captured comrade.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

An occasional chuckle, mostly my husband and I would look at each other in amazement as characters and events reminded us of people in the news today.

    Any additional comments?

Great story and Lou Diamond Phillips did an incredible job narrating. The only difficulty was in trying to follow such an intricate story with so many sub-stories. At times, I wanted to go back and re-read to understand who or what was really happening. However, that is just Clancy's unique style of writing.
