Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

    "I loved it"
    Overall

Understanding the frustration of living in a 93 year old body is not something I've read about. I also knew nothing about the circus during the 1930s depression. This work of fiction gives great insights into both, in a fabulously entertaining way. The narration was a major enhancement to the story.

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

Listening to this book in the beginning is boring. Keep on listening though, it is absolutely one of the best books I have listened to. While the murder is gruesome, the characters are unusual and the story line enthralling.

In Gulliver's Travels, the narrator represents himself as a reliable reporter of the fantastic adventures he has just experienced. But how far can we rely on a narrator who has been impersonated by someone else? The work purports to be a travel book, and describes the shipwrecked Gulliver's encounters with the inhabitants of four extraordinary places: Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa, and the country of the Houyhnhnms.

I don't know if the style of writing from the 1800s or the reader's affected British accent was what drove me crazy. I quit listening after the first seven hours.

I have been a voracious reader for more years than I'd like to admit. This is an engrossing story that is read extremely well. Enjoy!
