  • Warbound: Book III of the Grimnoir Chronicles

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 1 min)
    • By Larry Correia
    • Narrated By Bronson Pinchot
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Only a handful of people in the world know that mankind's magic comes from a living creature, and it is a refugee from another universe. The Power showed up here in the 1850s because it was running from something. Now it is 1933, and the Power's hiding place has been discovered by a killer. It is a predator that eats magic and leaves destroyed worlds in its wake. Earth is next. Former private eye Jake Sullivan knows the score. The problem is, hardly anyone believes him.

Would you listen to Warbound again? Why?

Absolutely will, well written and well performed.

Who was your favorite character and why?

If you don't like Jake Sullivan, I don't like you.

What does Bronson Pinchot bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He accomplished something I've only ever heard done once before: he made the characters more than what they might have been if I had just read the books. This is a feat I have only otherwise experienced with James Marsters' delivery of the Dresden Files readings. Mr. Pinchot's Jake Sullivan and Sally Fae Viera were marvelous. I couldn't have appreciated his work more. There were very few times he hit the wrong note with a character's tone or presentation.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    No spoilers.

    Any additional comments?

This is Mr. Correia's best series. I really appreciated his world building. He had a great story arc that he stuck to and didn't overdo. I mean, honestly, I could read Jake Sullivan books for ages, however, I think this story arc is brilliant. I can't see how these wouldn't be great movies.

  • Ghost Story: The Dresden Files, Book 13

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Jim Butcher
    • Narrated By John Glover
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When we last left the mighty wizard detective Harry Dresden, he wasn't doing well. In fact, he had been murdered by an unknown assassin. But being dead doesn't stop him when his friends are in danger. Except now he has nobody, and no magic to help him. And there are also several dark spirits roaming the Chicago shadows who owe Harry some payback of their own. To save his friends - and his own soul - Harry will have to pull off the ultimate trick without any magic....

Bill says: "Not the best audio book in the series"
    "5 Stars, BUT!"

James Marsters inhabits the role of Harry Dresden to the point that when I read the books, I hear Mr. Marsters' voice in my head. I can't say the same for any other series but the Harry Potter and Sookie Stackhouse books.

The writing of the book though, the writing is fantastic. Mr. Butcher keeps improving his craft. I know he prefers to write sword and pony stories, but his firm grasp on the world he has created is commendable. He does not leave it static. He is not as willing as George R.R. Martin to kill characters on an almost off-handed basis. He has a formula that he follows, but he isn't a slave to it and he's evolved it in an enjoyable and logical arc.

I commend Mr. Butcher for this installment. Now bring back Mr. Marsters.

  • Dead In the Family: Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Mystery #10

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By Charlaine Harris
    • Narrated By Johanna Parker

Finally settled with Viking vampire Eric, Sookie finds normalcy just as chaos surrounds her. Sookie’s former lover Bill, her boss Sam, and even Eric are struggling with family problems. Then things get really interesting when the werewolves tell Sookie an ominous presence is lurking.

    BRANDON says: "Harris or FanFic?"
    "Poorly plotted"

This is, without a doubt, the worst book in the series thus far. The book lacks a plot for approximately half its pages resulting in this reader being slightly confused as to why I was reading this book.

I understand that Ms. Harris needs to put out a book every year or so, but this was a poor effort on her part.

While fans of her series will doubtless enjoy this book, and while I didn't /hate/ it, the writing leaves the reader waiting for this year's actual book to come out. This novel feels as though someone's fanfic got used for the novel rather than Ms. Harris normally tighter efforts.

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By Jim Butcher
    • Narrated By James Marsters
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Long ago, Susan Rodriguez was Harry Dresden's lover-until she was attacked by his enemies, leaving her torn between her own humanity and the bloodlust of the vampiric Red Court. Susan then disappeared to South America, where she could fight both her savage gift and those who cursed her with it.Now Arianna Ortega, Duchess of the Red Court, has discovered a secret Susan has long kept, and she plans to use it-against Harry.

Amazon Customer says: "WOW. I'm stunned!"
"Excellent reading, Butcher's story kept fresh"

I'm never sure which I enjoy more, the writing or Mr. Marster's readings. Which works out nicely for me, since the who thing is very enjoyable. Other series and titles need to turn their ears and minds to this series. Well plotted and well read.
