  • The Vagina Monologues

    • UNABRIDGED (1 hr and 45 mins)
    • By Eve Ensler
    • Narrated By Eve Ensler

The Vagina Monologues is a moving, poignant and often hilarious play, which celebrates female sexuality in all its complexity and mystery. Originally drawn from a collection of interviews conducted by Eve Ensler, the Obie Award-winning play gives voice to some of the most intimate, rarely shared fantasies and fears of women from all walks of life.

    "Not bad, but not funny."

Once the shock value wears off, this is another socially/politically correct diatribe. It's entertaining, but it's not funny.

    • By Neil Gaiman, Michael Reaves
    • Narrated By Christopher Evan Welch
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Joey Harker isn't a hero. In fact, he's the kind of guy who gets lost in his own house. But then one day, Joey gets really lost. He walks straight out of his world and into another dimension. Joey's walk between the worlds makes him prey to two terrible forces: armies of magic and science who will do anything to harness his power to travel between dimensions.

    Gurmukh says: "A good listen"
    "The spirit of Heinlein"

Gaiman and Reeves channel early Heinlein and AE Van Vogt in this updated pulp sci-fi adolescent fantasy. There is everything from the kid learning about special powers, steam punk scenes, a reluctant team turned loyal name it. Great for my 10 year old and it left us eagerly wanting the next book.

  • Slan (Dramatized)

    • ORIGINAL (2 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By A. E. van Vogt
    • Narrated By Third Ear Radio Theater

In the 25th century mankind fought against the hated telepathic slan race in the fierce slan-wars. The result was the extermination of almost all slans, and the establishment of a world-wide police state.

    Lareau says: "Avoid!"
    "Poor adaptation"

Avoid. Piece uses sound effects in place of narration -- at some points more than 1 minute long. This makes the story sequence disjointed and hard to follow. And the voice of the villain is lost in the climactic dialogue. Sound levelling is atrocious and the effects are questionalbe (squeaky chair during a confrontation?).

The story channels Heinlein's teen hero genre mixed in with some space opera, and the actors -- who sound like high schoolers imitating 1930's style radio theater -- do their level best to keep the listener engaged.

Their efforts would be acceptable but for the truly awful production quality.

  • Executive Orders

    • ABRIDGED (5 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By Tom Clancy
    • Narrated By Edward Herrmann

When the President, most of the Cabinet, the Supreme Court, the Joint Chiefs and the majority of Congress are killed, Jack Ryan finds himself the new President, with the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Louis says: "One more great listen from Clancy."
    "Best of Clancy"

Far and away the best Clancy novel since Red Storm Rising. Sadly, it marks the apogee of Jack Ryan's career. There is nowhere to go from here, and Clancy is not going to keep re-writing the West Wing. All his books from this one forward talks about someone else. Too bad. But enjoy this one. It's the real deal.

  • The Count of Monte Cristo

    • ABRIDGED (2 hrs and 38 mins)
    • By Alexandre Dumas
    • Narrated By Bill Homewood

The Count of Monte Cristo is a tale of revenge and retribution. Edmond Dantes, a young, energetic sailor, is falsely accused of treason on his wedding day and incarcerated in the forbidding Chateau d'If prison. His escape and ultimate revenge on those who wronged him makes this one of the most thrilling stories in French literature, as compelling now as when it was first published in 1846.

    "Get the unabridged version"

Note even as good as the cliff notes. Despite valiant narrative efforts, it is just too short. This version captures none of the grandeur, sweetness, scale, or depth of the book. Get the unabridged version.

  • A Wizard of Earthsea

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 12 mins)
    • By Ursula K. Le Guin
    • Narrated By Harlan Ellison, Ursula K. Le Guin

This first volume of the Earthsea Cycle is an adventure story, a Quest, a tale of a proud, incautious boy who meddles too early with the Dark. It is a pure fantasy telling about a real thing: a boy coming into his power and his manhood...coming of age.

    Wyonia says: "Great Book...Frantic Narrator"
    "Master storytelling"

Not just a reading, but a performance. A tale told at camp by the firelight. This book has always been more than a children's fairy tale. Still, Ellison's version calls to every listener's inner child. I wish I knew more storytellers like this when I was a child. The usual critiques of this work (the lack of catharsis, many loose ends, etc.), should not diminish the brilliance of this rendition. Take this as the first chapter of a longer epic tale. Highly recommended.
