  • Nature Girl

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By Carl Hiaasen
    • Narrated By Lee Adams
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Honey Santana, impassioned, willful, possibly bipolar, self-proclaimed "queen of lost causes", has a scheme to help rid the world of irresponsibility, indifference, and dinnertime sales calls. She's taking rude, gullible Relentless, Inc., telemarketer Boyd Shreave and his less-than-enthusiastic mistress, Eugenie, into the wilderness of Florida's Ten Thousand Islands for a gentle lesson in civility. What she doesn't know is that she's being followed by her Honey-obsessed former employer.

Pamela says: "Well worth the wait!"
    "Not his best"

I have read (or listened to) all of Hiaasen's books. While I don't think it is as bad as some of the other reviewer's suggest, it is clearly one of his lesser efforts. The plot is thin and drags at times. The ending is predictable. Some of the humor is forced. Unlike some other reviewer's, I did like the narrator. I think she did the best she could with the mediocre material. I hope this is a temporary detour for Hiaasen, rather than a sign of things to come.

  • Ninth Key: The Mediator, Book 2

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Meg Cabot
    • Narrated By Johanna Parker

New York Times best-selling author Meg Cabot fills each adventure in the Mediator series with suspense and humor. Suze Simon is a liaison between ghosts and the living. But this teenager is no hand-holder, she's tough on the spirits who need her help. When the ghost of a murdered woman wakes Suze up one night with an troublesome request, the 16-year-old just wants to get rid of her.

    "Pleasantly surprised"

I listened to this book to get a feel for what my 13 year old daughter was reading. I didn't know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. The plot was interesting, the main character was reasonably well developed, and I ended up caring about the outcome. The author taps into teenage girl angst without being overly dramatic or sappy. I thought it might be a struggle to get through, but instead it was enjoyable.

  • Exile

    • UNABRIDGED (20 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By Richard North Patterson
    • Narrated By Dennis Boutsikaris
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

David Wolfe's life is approaching an exhilarating peak: a successful San Francisco lawyer, he's about to get married and has been primed for a run for Congress. But when the phone rings and he hears the voice of Hana Arif, the Palestinian woman with whom he had a passionate affair in law school, he begins a completely unexpected journey. The day after Hana's call, the prime minister of Israel is assassinated by a suicide bomber - and soon Hana is accused of being the mastermind behind the murder.

    John says: "Exile"
    "Entertaining and informative"

Plot is believable, reasonably absorbing, main characters are developed in depth. The real strength of this book is the topic. Author does a laudable job of personalizing the Arab-Israeli conflict and presenting a balanced portrayal. The issues are complex and depressing, but seem authentic. My only gripes (and they are minor) are that it was somewhat repetetive and verbose. The book is 20+ hrs long. He could have cut it by 25% and it would have been better, not worse. Still, very worthwhile and one of the better audiobooks I have purchased. I highly recommend it.

  • Wild Fire

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Nelson DeMille
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Executive Board of an exclusive men's club meets to talk about 9/11 and finalize a retaliation plan, known by a code name: Wild Fire. That weekend, a member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force is found dead. It's up to Detective John Corey and his wife, FBI Agent Kate Mayfield, to unravel a terrifying plot that starts with the Custer Hill Club and ends with American cities locked in the crosshairs of a nuclear device.

Joseph says: "Good, but the series is getting forced."

This is the first DeMille book I have listened to, but I have read all of his prior work. This is one of his lesser efforts. The premise is plausible and the science seems credible, but I think his John Corey and Kate Mayfield characters have run their course. Their interactions and dialogue have become predictable and repetetive at this point. Unless he finds a way to freshen them up, he should quit while he is not too far behind. If this was your first encounter with John Corey, perhaps the banter would be more interesting. This book was entertaining enough to pass the time, but certainly no gem. I thought Charm School, Plum Island, and The Lion's Game were much better.
