Although born to rule, Aidan lives as a scribe in a remote Irish monastery on the far, wild edge of Christendom. Secure in work, contemplation, and dreams of the wider world, a miracle bursts into Aidan's quiet life. He is chosen to accompany a small band of monks on a quest to the fabled city of Byzantium, where they are to present the beautiful and costly hand-illuminated Book of Kells to the emperor of all Christendom.

    Christine says: "Unforgettable!"
    "A truly great story!"
    Overall

This was my first by Lawhead. It will not be my last. He is wonderful. His character development is among the best. His plots and story line hold your interest and suspense throughout the book. Above all it is a story of faith that anyone (believers and nonbelievers) will appreciate.

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Teddy says: "The Book Deserves The Hype"
    "Engages you till the end"
    Overall

My first concern was that being targeted for a younger audience I may not enjoy it. After listening (and my wife) not a concern. Also don't worry about the ending leaving you hanging. I've not listened to the second book yet (but I plan too). But I didn't feel disappointed with a lot of loose ends. The only reason that I gave it a four instead of a five was the lack of spiritual depth with the characters. They were well developed otherwise and for most people this would not be a concern. You will enjoy it!

In the surge of a single sin, Riley's wife, daughter, and faith all washed away. He now haunts the streets, a mere shadow of the godly man he once was. And then he hears of a town in Maine where miracles are happening. Awaiting Riley is a hope beyond his dreams. But will his past destroy this second chance at life?

This story was well written from a Christian world view; that I believe will be enjoyed by anyone.

You will love the mystery and you will be surprised. Even if you are not a Christian you will enjoy seeing how these characters express their faith as they face overwhelming trials.

Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare.

Renato says: "much more than I expected"
"Draws you closer to the Lord"
    Overall

A friend of mine that read the Shack after my recommendation, said that she believed one of the reasons this book makes so many uncomfortable is that we are not accustom to being this close to God. I think she is right. You will love this book if you can accept the concept of "fiction" when talking about God. I don't agree with everything in the book, however I rarely agree with all of the other fictions I read, but I still can enjoy the message. And this book has a powerful message.

Steven James' Christy Award-nominated crime thriller pits FBI Special Agent Bowers against a serial killer who enjoys torturing women. After visiting the mountain vistas where the murderer posed his dead victims, Bowers receives a taunting call from the "Illusionist." Although Bowers gets close, his insidious foe continues to elude him.

Bill says: "Entertaining Enough, But Don't Listen Too Closely"
    "This book hooks you fast!"
    Overall

Very powerful start, with a dark side. The plot thickens quickly and you have a real page turner (or in the case of audio ... a real page listener). I would call this a mystery/suspense with a Christian world view. This is my first book by Steven James but it will not be my last.

Allicia says: "Christian Fiction That Doesn't Back Down"
"A great mix of History and Story Telling"

I feel that I have a greater understanding of the first century culture. I found myself caught up in the lives of the characters. They seemed so real even though their lifes were so different. Get this book and you will be inspired!

  • When the Game Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box

A promotion. A new house. The rewards of winning at life's game can be thrilling. But eventually everything goes back into the box, and what ultimately matters is whether we've played according to God's rules. John Ortberg uses popular games and his trademark gift of storytelling to help us live our lives for the things that really count.

Mike Henry Sr. says: "Great perspective on life"
    "Expand your thinking"
    Overall

This was my first book to read (listen to) of John Ortberg. It is not the typical motivational book that seems to be so popular with Christian writers lately. He challenges us to look at some of our attitudes in light of eternity. If you want to grow I recommend you trying this one. BTW, it's nice to have the author read the book.
