  • I, Sniper: A Bob Lee Swagger Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Stephen Hunter
    • Narrated By Buck Schirner
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Four famed '60s radicals are gunned down at long range by a sniper. Under enormous media scrutiny, the FBI quickly concludes that Marine war hero Carl Hitchcock, whose 93 kills were considered the leading body count tally among American marksman in Vietnam, was the shooter. But as the Bureau, led by Special Agent Nick Memphis, bears down, Hitchcock commits suicide. But Nick is suspicious and asks his friend, the retired Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger, to examine the data.

Steven says: "from a former MOS8541 and Hunter reader"
    "Well done narrative. Good book."

Better than what Hunter's work has been of late. More in the tone of the original Point of Aim. He gets all the technical stuff right. One of the few.

  • A Magic Broken

    • UNABRIDGED (1 hr and 45 mins)
    • By Vox Day
    • Narrated By Nick Afka Thomas

A Magic Broken is a tale of ruthlessness, courage and deceit. The novella tells the story of Captain Nicolas du Mere, an exile fleeing the death of his rebel lord, and Lodi, son of Dunmorin, a brave dwarf dedicated to rescuing his fellow dwarves from slavery. Their dangerous paths meet, but in a manner that is anything but predictable.

Andrew Stone says: "1/3 of a book - Ripe Off"
    "Refreshingly Classic sword and sorcery!"
What made the experience of listening to A Magic Broken the most enjoyable?

The way the characters are brought to life by a highly engaged narrator. The best I've heard, and I've heard a lot.

What did you like best about this story?

The story is fast and furious, fighting dwarves, ruthless men, enigmatic elves.

What does Nick Afka Thomas bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The voices of the characters. They are distinct and well crafted, delivered with feeling and enthusiasm. Bravo, Nick.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Were Conan a dwarf and Jason Bourne a swordsman.....

    Any additional comments?

If you love Tolkien and think A Song of Fire and Ice has gone a bit off the rails you will love this. Back to work Vox Day and Nick Afka Thomas; more of the same, and quickly!

  • The Gray Man

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 44 mins)
    • By Mark Greaney
    • Narrated By Jay Snyder
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Court Gentry is known as The Gray Man - a legend in the covert realm, moving silently from job to job, accomplishing the impossible, and then fading away. And he always hits his target. But there are forces more lethal than Gentry in the world. And in their eyes, Gentry has just outlived his usefulness. Now, he is going to prove that for him, there's no gray area between killing for a living-and killing to stay alive.

    Michael says: "High Energy Ride!"
"Good, clean, sun. Nice shoot 'em up."
Would you listen to The Gray Man again? Why?

This is the type of story I am primarily looking for in a thriller. Heavy on action, light on relationships, well read.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The book is fairly well researched on weapons and tactics, though tactics are employed with wildly successful outcomes (It IS fiction, right?!). If it grates on your nerves when an author is too lazy to get the guns right then this one is a safe bet to be cringe free.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The main character has some good lines that will have you grinning and looking like an idiot to those unaware you are enjoying an audiobook.

    Any additional comments?

It's light and fun and will pass the time really quickly.

  • The Musashi Flex

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Steve Perry
    • Narrated By Joe Barrett
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In the early 23rd century, one of very few ways to rise above your caste is to become a player in the extreme martial arts game known as the Musashi Flex. Lazlo Mourn, a battle-scarred veteran, is ready to hang up his blades when his moves suddenly evolve toward a form of fighting unlike any the galaxy has seen. Journalist Cayne Sola wants the big story on the games, and not even the fiercest warrior will stop her.

Robert says: "Great fun, well worth listening"
    "Great entertainment. Great performance."

One of the best books revolving around the martial arts and it's practitioners I have come across.

Full characters well fleshed out and clear, interactions plausible, settings and history/background well and elegantly described. The story moved along quickly and caught me up in it from the get-go.

Anyone into military scifi, the battles in spaceopera, even the one on one combat of epic fantasy will enjoy this immensely.

My thanks to Steve Perry for a great book, and to Joe Barret for distinct, interesting, well acted, and consistent characters.

Of note is the hero, and resident badass, is portrayed with a (passable - work on the "I", Joe) Southern accent which is as it should be.

  • First to Kill

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Andrew Peterson
    • Narrated By Dick Hill
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When you're the best at what you do, it's not always easy to walk away. Nathan McBride was retired. The trained Marine sniper and covert CIA operative had put the violence of his former life behind him. But not anymore. A deep-cover FBI agent has disappeared along with one ton of powerful Semtex explosive, enough to unleash a disaster of international proportions. The U.S. government has no choice but to coax Nathan out of retirement.

Ed says: "Sniper thriller par excellence"
"Good book. Grand effort by reader, but......"

that yankee accent is like fingernails on a chalkboard.

If that's not a problem for you the reader gives an obviously sincere and serious effort to deliver the story as a performance and more than just narrative. If he would just quit talking through his nose...

  • The Red Wolf Conspiracy

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 16 mins)
    • By Robert V. S. Redick
    • Narrated By Michael Page
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Imperial Merchant Ship Chathrand is the last of her kind. Six hundred years old, the secrets of her construction long forgotten, the massive vessel dwarfs every other sailing craft in the world. It is a palace with sails, a floating outpost of the Empire of Arqual. And it is on its most vital mission yet: to deliver a young woman whose marriage will seal the peace between Arqual and its mortal enemy, the secretive Mzithrin Empire.

    Lindira says: "Very Good"
"Good Listen - irritating main charecter"

Enjoyed the story and most of the charecters were interesting throughout. Some action in the mix but not heavily if you are looking for a swashbuckler.

Be warned; This is book 1 one of ?. Nothing much is resolved in the end - maybe a half wrap up that is vaguely satisfying.

The main character is portrayed as a total dope with no initiative or ability to make a timely decision. I found this very frustrating, you may not.

  • The Steel Remains

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By Richard K. Morgan
    • Narrated By Simon Vance

In just a few short years, Richard K. Morgan has vaulted to the pinnacle of the science fiction world. Now he turns his iconoclastic talents to epic fantasy, crafting a darkly violent, tautly plotted adventure sure to thrill old fans and captivate new readers.

Tizroc says: "This isn't your father's gay hero!"
    "Gay Porn"

Unless you have a tolerance for extremely graphically explicit descriptions of homosexual acts, move along there is nothing for you here.

This is one highly offensive piece that would probably have been a good book (judging by the authors other work) had the author not decided to try his hand at literary gay porn.

There needs to be some indication of this aspect on the book's page so that prospective buyers will not make the same mistake I did in purchasing it.

Perhaps there is a heterosexual version????

  • Juggler of Worlds: 200 Years Before the Discovery of the Ringworld

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 54 mins)
    • By Larry Niven, Edward M. Lerner
    • Narrated By Tom Weiner
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Covert agent Sigmund Ausfaller is Earth's secret weapon, humanity's best defense against all conspiracies, real and imaginary, and all foes both human and alien. Who better than a brilliant paranoid to expose the devious plots of others?

But Sigmund may finally have met his match in Nessus, representative of the secretive Puppeteers, the elder race who wield vastly superior technologies.

    John says: "boring rewrite"
    "Bounces around a bit"

with what almost seem like mini stories with abrupt and sudden conclusions lacking detail and feeling incomplete like there was more of the story to be told within. This may be an effect of having the story read to you. They all fit together toward a rational and satisfying conclusion, however.
