YES-I will! This story is fascinating, I knew nothing about this subject and I'm a bit of a history lover. Why isn't this widely known outside of France? or is it just me? I don't ever remember his name coming up when studying the French Revolution or Napoleon. There is so much here you will need to listen to it more than once.
Candice Millard: Destiny of the Republic. The level of detail that went into the research to bring this exceptional man to life, to restore his rightful place in world history.
I think the thing that really stands out in my mind is death by medical treatment, how did this man survive the doctors while being held prisoner? President Garfield was not so lucky in Candice Millard book.
Yes-I turned it on, on Saturday morning when I got up and listened to it all day while doing my housework and errands, I did not finish, but I did the same on Sunday and was able to finish it in two settings.
This book should be made into a film, as long as Hollywood doesn't try to impose 21st century morals onto 18th century life. Let the French take their own lumps for the cruelty of the sugar plantations and slave trade and post revolution anti black laws.
This book is for young people 18-25 yrs. old or maybe even for people that are just now starting to question their own religious beliefs.
I was a firm non-believer when I bought this book and I was kinda hoping that it would offer some insight into why humans believe what we believe, in a more anthropological way. What you got here is Richard and Lalla tag teaming the dialog and it comes off with this weird feeling that there should be a bright light shinning in your face while they "deprogram" you. I found this format distracting, it felt hokey with a tinge of desperate.
NO!! Very slow moving, read in monotone.
NO!!! This book represents a very small category of books where the movie is truly better than the book, and the movie wasn't that good either. This book is more about the internal dialog of a man trying not to loose his sanity, than any of the monsters standing outside his house each night.
The material is very depressing, with only a few speaking characters. I wish the narrator would have given more range of emotion to the lead. It felt monotone.
Hollywood's already done this a couple of times.
Even if this book is on sale, avoid the temptation to buy it........you will be sorry if you do.
YES I would, and I own the book too(it looks just like a bible). I bought it after I listened to the audio version. In fact I bought it from a seller right here on Amazon. Fisher Stevens is able to to bring each character to life, he gave them all their own distinct voice. He is very good at this kind of work and should stick with it. I hope it pays well.
I don't know of any other books that I could compare this one to, this book is able to use the old testament, myth, legend and humor to fill in the "missing years" of Jesus' life without changing the underlying moral character of the son of god, while creating a story that sounds completely plausible.
I have not, but I will be sampling more of his work here on Audible
Biff of course, he is the driver of this bus and ain't nobody getting his wheel time. Please don't get me wrong there are many memorable characters in this book like, "Maggie Magdalene" the girl that they both love. Raziel the angel who is addicted to daytime T.V.
I also loved how Mr. Moore was able to capture the raw unknowing wonder of childhood. Well Done!!
