John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First, he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce - and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So, we fight, to defend Earth and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Would you listen to Old Man's War again? Why?

It was a great story. It had a lot of new ideas and concepts that had not been explored so much in depth since Robert Heinlein. The whole idea gave a new twist to the ideas that I read almost 50 years ago in Starship Trooper.

Who was your favorite character and why?

John Perry was a great central character.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed the unveiling of the whole idea of becoming a warrior. I do not want to spoil some of the surprises in the book.

    Any additional comments?

    Wonderful Find.

He's a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. He's also a knight errant who's wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. First story in a collection of interlinked tales of crime and retribution laced with dark humour, set around the festive season. Billy Partridge wasn’t really cut out to be a cat burglar, but it was ‘do the job, or come up with thirteen grand by Thursday, or have both legs shattered’.‘Do the job’ seemed the least worst option. But he’s about to find out just how bad the least worst option can be….

What would have made Twelve Days of Winter: Crime at Christmas - A Partridge in a Pear Tree better?

    A better ending.

Would you ever listen to anything by Stuart MacBride again?

The collection was a bit choppy. If the next was less choppy and easier in some places to follow it would be better. Since my wife is from Glasgow the accent and the ideas were good but I think the presentation of the plot needed help.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Pear Tree. First chapter.
