Very good book for sure. So hard to read at times because of just how terrible it was for the Jews during WW2. Super creative in the separate stories all coming together in the end.

If you could sum up Fathers and Sons in three words, what would they be?

    Learned something new.

    Any additional comments?

Keep a list of the character name summaries by your side. Russian names are definitely more difficult to keep track. It becomes easier as you go.

This sweet and funny tale of a preppy editor buying a Brooklyn deli with his Korean in-laws is about family, culture clash, and the quest for authentic experiences. It starts with a gift. When Ben Ryder Howe’s wife, the daughter of Korean immigrants, decides to repay her parents’ self-sacrifice by buying them a store, Howe, an editor at the rarefied Paris Review, agrees to go along.

What a great book! I was amazed at just how great this book was. What a great story teller! So interesting and funny in so many ways. Fun to hear about the many trials and tribulations that happen in trying to get going with the deli business. Neat to hear about the real-life family struggles that we all deal with.
Lots of interesting people/customers to hear about. You feel like you're right there in the deli. I loved the hearing about George Plimpton too. He was a neat man and the book shows that. Narrating was as good as you get!

News of the sudden death of his childhood friend compels Jono Riley, an aging bartender and part-time actor, to return for a few days to the place where he grew up, the working-class neighborhoods of East Providence, Rhode Island. Author McLarty weaves the story of Jono's return with that of his coming-of-age in the early 1960s, including the story of some mysterious shootings.

Ron McLarty has become one of my favorite authors. His writing covers pretty much of every emotion that we feel as people. I always feel like I'm right there in the story on the sidelines watching everything happen as he reads it. He is also as good as you get when it comes to narrating.
Just solid all the way around.

In late 2003, in his column in Entertainment Weekly, Stephen King called The Memory of Running "the best novel you won't read this year." This glowing endorsement of the audiobook resulted in Ron McLarty receiving a $2 million two-book deal from Viking Penguin. Also, Warner Brothers has shelled out big bucks for the movie rights to The Memory of Running, for which McLarty will write the script.

What a great book. Great narration. The story is intense, sad, happy and just about every other emotion the we have as humans.
I was actually sad when it was over. I immediately downloaded another of Ron McLarty's books right after finishing this one. I never write reviews, but I was so touched by this book that I just had to let others know.
    You won't be disappointed.

Never heard of Larry Winget before, but it was on the 5.95 special and I thought I'd give him a try. It's just not cute after awhile to hear the "good ole, psycho country boy" persona telling you all the same crap that you've heard for years. He just tries too hard to be "tough".

"Years ago, I wrote about a retail store in the Palo Alto environs—a good one, which had a box of two-cent candies at the checkout. I subsequently remember that 'little' parting gesture of the two-cent candy as a symbol of all that is Excellent at that store. Dozens of people who have attended seminars of mine have come up to remind me, sometimes 15 or 20 years later, of “the two-cent candy story,” and to tell me how it had a sizable impact on how they did business."

    Overall

I tried to think of a way to convey just how bad I think this book was. It's hard to do,I would listen and think there was no way that Tom could possibly believe most of what he writes. I think that his belief is that repeating demands over and over in a brash, cocky, "in your face" tone is somehow good business motivating and direction. I made it through about half and then got so pissed at the repetitive nonsense that I had to just stop.

Here for download is the best-selling and award-winning recording of former U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins. No poet since Robert Frost has managed to combine high critical acclaim with such broad popular appeal. His last three collections of poems have broken sales records for poetry, and his readings are usually standing room only. His audience has been enhanced tremendously by his appearances on National Public Radio, and it includes people of all backgrounds and age groups.
