The narrator is terrific! The story itself is pretty good, but the narrator truly brings the story and its characters to life in a compelling way.
I liked the character portrayals best - each voice was totally different and full of life.
So many! Wally Smith/Shonsu's voice is simply captivating.
Mostly - the story started off a little slowly, but I kept coming back because the narration was so good. After the story picked up, I wanted to listen as often as possible.
This was a great narration match for this book - Donald Corren does a commendable job. I will keep a look out for other books with this narrator!
I love the group adventure! Also, the first-person narrative is great. The narration is energetic while remaining subtle throughout the book, so it fits the story and the main character perfectly.
The Goonies meets Twilight Zone - a great adventure with a mind-blowing mystery centered around a unique house.
Tim or Veet may be my favorite. But, Nate and all the other characters are awesome, too. Each character's voice is distinct and well-suited for author's description.
Ray Porter does an awesome job with this book!
A better narrator would have made this 5 stars across the board. The book itself is phenomenal, but the narration match is hideous. The Kindle Fire HD's Text-to-Speech narrator is better than the one chosen for this Audible series.
Connie and Pat were the only people whose voices the narrator portrayed with any consistency and believability. Note: these characters barely have a handful of lines between them.
She over-enunciated every other word, even when she was "portraying" a character; she made Katie sound like a pompous schoolmarm; she made Sam sound like bad 1940's mob caricature; she made Owen sound listless; she made everyone one else sound stuffy or brainless, regardless how the author described them.
If you have a Kindle Fire HD, and you increase the reading speed, the narrator's pace is a tiny bit less grueling.
This narrator may as well have been reading from a dictionary. She seemed to make no effort in bringing the characters to life and did not bring the essence of the story into her reading.
Dear Audible: If there is any possibility that an audio book series could be re-released with a different narrator, please, please, please do that with this series!
