Rick Reilly has been a senior sports writer for Sports Illustrated for the past 17 years, and has been named "Sports Writer of The Year" seven times. Now, he pokes his nose into the world of golf. How does he do it? By caddying ("looping") for top players, celebrities, and some really bad run-of-the-mill golfers, Reilly gains insight into the minds of golfers, their winning or less-than-winning ways, and what they actually mutter when they're in the middle of play.

One of the funniest things I've listened to all year. (2005) Listening to the Trump chapter alone is worth the price of entry. He's a witty and intelligent writer and very well read. Put a smile on your face and listen to this book.

Vienna. 1913. Lysander Rief, a young English actor, walks through the city to his first appointment with the eminent psychiatrist, Dr. Bensimon. He is sitting anxiously in the waiting room when an extraordinary woman enters.... Moving from Vienna to London's West End, the battlefields of France, and hotel rooms in Geneva, Waiting for Sunrise is a feverish and mesmerising journey into the human psyche, and a beautifully observed portrait of wartime Europe.

Would you consider the audio edition of Waiting for Sunrise to be better than the print version?

The print edition is better but not by much. With a more accomplished narrator it would be comparable.

What did you like best about this story?

The central character, who is flawed, humane and very easy to empathise with.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

High pitched voice, lacked the gravitas to read the autobiographical sections as the theatrical Lysander. Otherwise a bland, effete British voice.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Read the book

Mike Engleby says things that others dare not even think. When the novel opens in the 1970s, he is a university student, having survived a "traditional" school. A man devoid of scruple or self-pity, Engleby provides a disarmingly frank account of English education. Yet beneath the disturbing surface of his observations lies an unfolding mystery of gripping power.

This is without any doubt the best work of fiction I have ever listened to. The book is fabulous, literate and pleasing in every possible way. The narrator does a first class job and clearly understands and enjoys playing Engleby. Memories of this book will stay with me for a very long time.

Who was Adolf Hitler? It's a question writers have been trying to answer for more than 60 years. How do we explain Hitler's hatred? Where did it come from? Could it happen again? Norman Mailer sets out to respond to these and other crucial aspects of Hitler's personality in his immensely readable new novel. Spanning three generations, and a hundred years of history, the book brings to life the Hitlers: grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and, ultimately, young Adolf.

This is an unusual book, beautifully written and crafted around the conceit of an angel telling us the story of the ancestry of Adolf Hitler. Without drawing conclusions about nature versus nurture and the fact that this book is fiction, it does make one reappraise our wrongheaded beliefs that Hitler had a boring "normal" upbringing, and somehow turned bad. The parochial atmosphere of provincial Austria is superbly described. Listen to it with an open mind and you'll love it.

It is the summer of 1976 in Oxfordshire, England, and someone is trying to kill Sally Gilmartin. The only person she can trust is her daughter, Ruth, a young single mother struggling with her own demons. Now Sally must tell her daughter the truth: She is actually Eva Delectorskaya, a Russian émigré recruited for the British Secret Service in 1939.

It was such a pleasure to listen to an intelligent novel whose beauty lies in it's simplicity. Boyd manages to inter-weave two distinct plot lines and end up with a satisfying conclusion. It's tense, thrilling and romantic. A must listen in unabridged form. The female narrator is an accomplished British actress (even been in a Bond film!) and she's sublime in the delivery and pitching of each character. She even has the French words spoken without fault. So in conclusion the source material from Boyd is great and the delivery even better.

When you listen to this title your mind will very quickly get used to the idea that you don't smoke, and as the title says, you will free yourself from the smoking habit and remain a non-smoker forever. This recording also includes positive suggestions to prevent you putting on weight or starting any other negative patterns in place of the smoking habit you leave in the past. In fact, when you stop smoking, you will feel ever more determined to keep fit and remain healthy.

    Overall

This is very personal and difficult to rate. The recording is professional but the voice grates. The reader has a slight cockney accent, certainly not flat received prononciation (the Queen's english if you may), which makes him sound like someone trying to sell me a used car at an east London market stall. Ok I am labouring the point, but the content would have been much more powerful if he had used a professional reader with a pleasant voice. Regional accents are fine in some circumstances, but not here and not for an international audience. Hypnosis requires the most subtle communication and is weakened by the reader's vowells and stacatto diction.

I am not a "Sly" fan by any means, but had seen him interviewed numerous times on non cinematic subjects and found him intelligent, driven and amusing. If you want to learn about nutrition, exercise and improving your life, and have an entertaining back story about SS, then this is really a very good book.

    Overall

Don't put off listening to this great book until tomorrow. Seriously this is a practical, step by step approach to becoming more action orientated, focusses the mind on the order and importance of tasks. Using knowledge of human psychology the author believes we can trick, cajole and manipulate ourselves into productivity just as easily as we can fall into passivity and procrastination. We just need to recognise the signs of weakness and act on them. Worth a listen on the way to work.
