If you don't like silly, if you offend easily or if you are one of those people who just can't live in the Colbert Nation, then don't buy this book, otherwise, buy this book. This is a download you will keep on your device forever because when you need some cheering up, here it is nearly as new as the first time you heard it. One warning though, don't listen to this with your mother. If she laughs at it, you will lose respect for her.
Read in someone else's review about Bill O'Reilly saying Calvary instead of Cavalry and sure enough he does (this just made me laugh and become cautious about pronouncing Cavalry, not that there's a whole lot of call for that). The narration sounds like he is yelling at you, but he is enthusiastic about the subject and that just makes it enjoyable. Not alot new in this volume, I'm wondering why I have read so many accounts of Lincoln's assassination. But the story is engaging and enjoyable and fun to listen to especially on a long drive. Left me wishing he would have taken off on Andrew Johnson and the aftermath of the assassination and not just stopped after the conspirators are hanged...
A book written nearly a century ago that is as relevant as one written yesterday. Sinclair Lewis explores a mature relationship of a married couple who are strong for each other when needed and who support each other at all times. An entertaining and enjoyable story as these innocents walk half way across the country to get away from a nagging and domineering daughter and her overbearing husband as the world throws whatever daggers it can at them. I cannot believe that I have lived so long without enjoying a Sinclair Lewis novel and now I have listened to and enjoyed almost all of them.
Elmer Gantry is a classic without the weighty mindnumbing prose that can accompany the label, "classic." The characters are well developed and interesting and the time listening went by quickly because I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. If you are like me and left this book off of your reading list, don't wait a minute more. Be careful, you may loose your religion!
