  • Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Near-Death Experience and Journey into the Afterlife

On November 10, 2008, Dr. Eben Alexander was driven into coma by a disease so lethal that only 1 in 10,000,000 survive. Seven days later, he awakened with memories of a fantastic odyssey deep into another realm that were more real than this earthly one - memories that included meeting a deceased birth sister he had never known existed. Dr. Alexander deployed all his knowledge as a scientist to find out whether his mind could have played a trick on him. In its shutdown state, there was no way it could have.

Would you listen to Proof of Heaven again? Why?

Yes, definitely! Although only purchasing this audio book this last week, I have completed it and just about to listen to it again. I have purchased this book as a gift for family and friends.

What other book might you compare Proof of Heaven to and why?

Although this book is ultimately about Dr Alexander's astounding near-death experience (NDE), I feel that his journey prior and post his NDE is at times gut-wrenching (I cannot give away too much here). Therefore it is difficult to compare this book with say "Dying to be Me: My Journey from Cancer, to Near Death, to True Healing" by Anita Moorjani, being the only other book I have read on the subject matter. In my opinion, Anita's book introduces the reader to the idea that "all is well in the universe and live your life fearlessly". Dr Alexander a renowned academic neurosurgeon, who previous to his own account was a sceptic of the phenomenon of near-death experiences, raises the level considerably by giving us substantial medical PROOF and elaborates in detail on the concepts of "Truth" and "consciousness". This very moving book is very well written and is a must read.

Which character – as performed by Eben Alexander – was your favorite?

Dr Eben Alexander, who incidentally is a brilliant narrator - you will not be disappointed here.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Surprisingly I did. One night, I was so overcome with emotion that I had to take a break from reading. Keep a box of tissues handy.

    Any additional comments?

As a loving and devoted mother of a precious three year old special needs child (both medical and developmental), I gravitated toward this book seeking hope and inspiration to quell the insidious sense of abandonment I have felt from family, friends and moreover God on this seemingly lonely and long journey. Unexpectedly, this book has delivered on many fronts, but particularly a message Dr Alexander received as he travelled through heaven: "You are loved and cherished, dearly, forever"; "You have nothing to fear"; "There is nothing you can do wrong."

Dr. George K. Simon knows how people push your buttons: your children---especially teens---are experts at it, as is your mate. A coworker may quietly undermine your efforts while professing to be helpful, or your boss may prey on your weaknesses. Manipulative people have two goals: to win and to look good doing it.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely! If you like to know the how's and the why's, and I guess moreover, what you can do strategically in dealing with certain personality types (i.e. manipulative in nature), then this book is worth a listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The author - what a brilliant mind!

What does Kevin Foley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Wonderful narrator - adds to the seriousness of dealing with covertly aggressive people.
