I never read Nancy Drew books growing up (I'm 42) but I had always been curious about them. I thought the audiobooks were a fun way to get to know them, especially with Laura Linney as the narrator. It's true that the writing is quite old-fashioned and not so "politically correct" as another reviewer mentioned, but I found it to be charmingly quaint, not offensive. I was surprisingly absorbed by the twists and turns of the plot. I cannot say enough about Laura Linney! She is wonderful. Overall, this was a fantastic light & easy listen.
I've listened to the entire series and loved the experience. I felt myself completely transported to another world. The action is super exciting and the characters are unforgettable. The narration is perfect. It is very different from the Harry Potter books but if you are an adult (like me) who enjoy well-written young adult books, you will enjoy the fun and the originality of this series. I didn't reallly like Artemis Fowl after the first book... I wasn't sure if I wanted to read the second one but I'm glad I continued because seeing Artemis develop as a character is what made me truly love the series. I often laughed out loud listening to the books and even cried a few times.
It started off great with an interesting premise and fascinating historical details. I liked the narrator's voice and her various accents. About half way through, however, the story loses steam (both in action and in romance) and just meanders on and on in a very repetitive way. With about 2 hours left, I realized that I just didn't care anymore what happened to the characters so I stopped listening. I'm glad I bought the book on a major sale because I would have been upset that I wasted my credit on it.
