The first two books were good, Clan of the Cave Bear being the strongest of the books so far. This book was horrible. The sex scenes are ridiculous and I kept trying to skip over them. The he said/she said complicated romance and star crossed lovers plot line was just horrible. Without spoilers, it took forever for the main characters to decide what to do next. If I hadn't bought this so long ago, I would want a refund. It is worth reading if you are bored with all of your other audible books, and want something long to listen to. That is the only reason I listened to it again.
Disappointment. The first two books were enjoyable. This book was a total rehash of the first two, and a ton of boring love scenes thrown in.
It would be somewhere in the middle of my large library. I'd listen to it again, but it isn't a book I'll be craving.
I was pleased by Eric Flint's influence on David Weber's story. In more recent Weber books I get so tired of listening to every one of David Weber's characters taking deep breaths and shaking their heads to clear their minds of the long inner monologues he relies on to move the story...this was a refreshing change.
My mind wandered in some sections, I had to rewind and listen again, so no..I was not glued to the story on this one.
A worthwhile listen if you are a fan of the Honorverse but would like David Weber's style cleaned up a bit. It was an enjoyable listen.
I would read other David Weber books, but absolutely nothing by Charles Keating. His voice is so soothing it almost puts me to sleep.
The performance is just...BORING. The book itself isn't bad, but I want Oliver Wyman back! He made the early books interesting!
If you are desperately sold on the Safehold books, and MUST continue with the series, go ahead...but I personally am returning this book.
I have listened to the first 4 books in this series, and the first book is definitely the best.
Faye, absolutely. Her naivete and genuine innocence is charming, and her power level is amazing, yet she stays humble, thanks to her upbringing. She is thoroughly enjoyable.
Jake Sullivan. He portrays the character as gently spoken but intelligent, just as the book describes him.
If you haven't listened to the first two books in the series, do yourself a favor and download them first. This is a series worth listening to.
This is one of my favorites, out of hundreds. I would say it is probably so great because it is FINALLY an end to a long long series, but I enjoyed the whole thing.
I've listened to all of their depictions of the other Wheel of Time books. Some of the pronunciations are slightly different from time to time, but not as noticeably as in previous books.
We lost many treasured characters in this book...but in "The Last Battle" of course we will have losses. There are many memorable moments that tugged at the heart as we lost a favorite character, but each ending was a decent wrapping up of their part of the storyline.
At the 2nd segment of this book I started fretting about the fact that I only had 3 more to go...The book is long, but it is a culmination of so many story lines, it Had to be. Absolutely worth the read, but I suggest starting at the beginning. This would not be a good stand alone book.
I tried multiple times to get through this audiobook, but I can't get into the story...There are moments of brilliance, but only sprinkled in the middle of long endless story.
I barely took off my MP3 player...I couldn't get enough. After the first few hours I began to fret that there was no book to listen to after this...Even 18+ hours wasn't enough. Great, great listen.
Top 20 percent.
That is hard. Each character is well thought out and described. I guess Sister would be high on the list. There are so many levels to this character.
All of them. It took a long time for any of them to get a decent meal!
The first 1/4 of this book was slow and failed to capture me. The book is from the late 80s, so there is a gap in current cultural fears. I wouldn't currently consider this a "horror" book, although there were gory scenes, but in the 80s, this would have been truly scary. I walked away from this book and went to another Audible..but when I came back, the story picked up and I couldn't stop listening. The ending was completely satisfying at the end of a long listen.
I have enjoyed all of these books...the entire series is fast moving, action packed fun. The first two books were about Owen Pitt, the third book was a side story..this book is back to Owen as the main character. Absolutely, 100% worth the credit. I recommend starting with book 1 though..because they are all good.
