  • The Count of Monte Cristo

    • UNABRIDGED (47 hrs)
    • By Alexandre Dumas
    • Narrated By John Lee

Dashing young Edmond Dantès has everything: a fine reputation, an appointment as captain of a ship, and the heart of a beautiful woman. But his perfect life is shattered when three jealous friends conspire to destroy him. Falsely accused of a political crime, Dantès is locked away for life in the infamous Chateau d'If prison. But it is there that Dantès learns of a vast hidden treasure.

This is a fantastic book. Period. The story is wonderfully constructed and beautifully written. The narration is clear and the characters rendered perfectly by narrator John Lee. I could not stop listening to this book. I would sit in my car at lunch or in my driveway at night, listening to "just one more section."

I heartily recommend this book, it's a great one !

  • Downtown Owl: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By Chuck Klosterman
    • Narrated By Phillip Baker Hall, Lily Rabe, Wiley Wiggins, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Somewhere in North Dakota, there is a town called Owl that isn't there. Disco is over, but punk never happened. They don't have cable. They don't really have pop culture, unless you count grain prices and alcoholism. People work hard and then they die. They hate the government and impregnate teenage girls. But that's not nearly as awful as it sounds; in fact, sometimes it's perfect.

    "A Great Listen"

This book is constructed in an episodic character-centric manner. The readers are well suited to their characters and I particularly loved Philip Baker Hall...He reminded me of Eli on youtube's eli the accountant channel. Klosterman has some good insights into 80's's too bad that he's about 20 years or so too late, that makes those insights seem a bit facile. Nonetheless, the story is interesting and the narration fun.

  • Murdering Mr. Lincoln: A New Detection of the 19th Century's Most Famous Crime

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By Charles Higham
    • Narrated By Dan Cashman

Drawing from letters, diaries, previously unstudied records of official hearings, railway timetables, and obscure shipping manifests, Higham has woven a spellbinding account of intrigue. He proves conclusively that high-level figures, including those in government and trade, were involved in the murder plot, and not John Wilkes Booth alone.

    "Awash in Details"

Think twice before choosing this audio book. Mr. Higham has done his homework well; it is clear that this book is painstakingly researched down to the smallest detail. No doubt, the murder of Mr. Lincoln was not as simple as a lone gunman happening by Ford?s theater the night Lincoln decided to take in a play. However, a story would have gone a long way towards tying together the myriad details that Mr. Higham has uncovered regarding this case. I found myself overwhelmed by the names, dates, and events that flew off the pages. I would have liked a bit more of a gripping narrative to hold it all together. Scholarship gets an A+, listenability a C- at best.
