Loved Hill's "The Various Haunts of Men" Steven Pacey has a pleasant reading voice but sometimes hard to tell when there was a character change. Maybe he was just as bored as I was.
You could cut any scene or character and it wouldn't change the book. Seems to be just unrelated descriptions of people and their lives.
I would have ended the book with a serial killer taking out all of the characters. Oh, except for the children. And the labrador.
I enjoyed this enough to buy the sequel but I won't buy anymore with Dave Fennoy narrating. Although Mr. Fennoy is a well-known voice actor, he failed to place the right accents on many characters. Most characters, regardless of background, had a deep southern African American accent. But the worst was the Hispanic detective that sounded like Count Dracula. It was ridiculous.
There needs to be a section for trite romance disguised as thriller. Narrator sounded like she was introducing the Fall Fashion line.
Nice little story, great narrator but at the end, I wasn't interested enough in the lead character to make me read Book 2
A different take on other dimensions
Really entertaining as long as you don't think about the science too critically
The narrator/actor. The beginning of the story was slow but I keep listening because of the narrator.
His perfect pace.
Take out the annoying nasal narration for some of the characters.
No. I think just a one off for Child. Maybe he had a balloon mortgage payment coming up and dashed this one out.
Reacher - but he was overly sarcastic at times.
**SPOILER ALERT!!!** **SPOILER ALERT!!!****SPOILER ALERT!!!** Too easy to solve. Got it in the first 3rd. I think I may have liked better if I had read it instead of listening. The narrator's soft voice and genderless personal pronouns gave away that the killer was a woman. The robotic responses of the victims responses indicated that they were hypnotized.
Yes. Its just fun and the author did a great job of describing the fantasy world.
Too many! The description of Alex in the Etheric was delightful.
I found she performed all the characters with sufficient differentiation to identify. Even performs male characters well.
There's another world out there!
I was looking for something other than mysteries and thrillers. I never read or watch vampire or witch stories. The first fantasy book I bought was poor in character and background. This one hooked me from the beginning.
I liked the premise of "The Grey" world but didn't think the author gave a sufficient description.
Work on descriptive background.
Not really. Sounded like a 12 year old and cannot perform male characters.
Always listen to books in the regional accent!
I listened to the last chapter 3 times. It was a very moving closing. And I needed closure after being brought so deep into the story.
I had purchased the book in print, then decided I wanted to hear the story in the Irish accent. An excellent decision.
