Eve Dallas is a New York police lieutenant hunting for a ruthless killer. In over 10 years on the force, she's seen it all - and knows that her survival depends on her instincts. And she's going against every warning telling her not to get involved with Roarke, an Irish billionaire - and suspect in Eve's murder investigation. But passion and seduction have rules of their own, and it's up to Eve to take a chance in the arms of a man she knows nothing about - except the addictive hunger of needing his touch.

The characters are so standard and you could guess every bit of the storyline. The bad guy was laugh out loud. Saying that you are a strong independent woman does not make you one, behaving like one does.

  • Marvel Comics: The Untold Story

Throughout this decades-long journey to becoming a multibillion-dollar enterprise, Marvel's identity has continually shifted, careening between scrappy underdog and corporate behemoth. As the company has weathered Wall Street machinations, Hollywood failures, and the collapse of the comic book market, its characters have been passed along among generations of editors, artists, and writers - also known as the celebrated Marvel "Bullpen".

Greg says: "It's as if this book was written for me!"

    Story

I enjoyed the writing and the narration. But I must say that it was like complaint after complaint. Not enough freedom, Too much freedom. The arguments about who owned what. How sad that it came across to me that it was a slog to produce these comics and then it became a factory to make money. Only Stan Lee seemed to achieve any job satisfaction.

  • Death Masks: The Dresden Files, Book 5

Harry Dresden, Chicago's only practicing professional wizard, should be happy that business is pretty good for a change. But he also knows that whenever things are going good, the only way left for them to go is bad. Way bad. Recent examples: A duel with the lethal champion of the Red Court, who must kill Harry to end the war between vampires and wizards...Hit men using Harry for target practice...The missing Shroud of Turin - and the possible involvement of Chicago's most feared mob boss.

James says: "Pick up the coin?"
    "Weakest Dresden File"

    Story

I have listened to the previous Dresden Files and have found this one to be by far the weakest. Very uninspiring, lacking any excitement and covering old ground from the other Dresden Files. I will listen to the next book by Butcher as it is a good series, but this one was poor in comparison with the others.

  • Goldfinger

    (215)
    Story
    (217)

James Bond is challenged by a maniacal superfiend: the world's cleverest, cruelest criminal. Complications abound. A beautiful golden girl turns up dead, and a friendly game of two-handed canasta turns into a deadly game of survival with ever-rising stakes: 15 billion dollars worth of U.S. government bullion. But 007 knows that Auric Goldfinger's rules remain brutally simple: heads I win, tails you die.

DARBY KERN says: "One of Fleming's better books"
    "My least favourite Bond"

    Story

Bond himself is great as a character, but this story was disappointing in terms of being difficult to believe. It also lacked action and excitement. It wouldn't put me off trying other Bond books, but it has been the weakest Bond book I have listened to.

  • Gaspipe: Confessions of a Mafia Boss

Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso, the boss of New York's Lucchese crime family, was a Mafia superstar, responsible for more than 50 murders. Currently serving 13 life sentences at a federal prison in Colorado, Casso has given journalist and New York Times best-selling author Philip Carlo the most intimate, personal look into the world of La Cosa Nostra ever seen.

    Story

Having read quite a few books on the subject of the mafia, I found that this book gave a new perspective in some ways. The narrative is simple and easy to listen to. The later part of the book held some surprises for me in terms of just how many people turned state's evidence and Carlo explains what was done with that evidence.

  • The Elfish Gene: Dungeons, Dragons and Growing Up Strange

    Story

Coventry, 1976. For a brief, blazing summer, a young Mark Barrowcliffe had the chance to be normal. He blew it...While other teenagers concentrated on being coolly rebellious, Mark – like millions of other boys in the ’70s and ’80s – chose to spend his entire adolescence pretending to be a wizard or a warrior, an evil priest or a dwarf. Armed only with pen, paper and some funny-shaped dice, this lost generation gave themselves up to the craze of fantasy role-playing games, stopped chatting up girls and started killing dragons.

Amazon Customer says: "Mostly good but a disappointing end"
"Hilarious - but then I grew up in England..."

    Story

I thought this book was laugh-out-loud funny, told with self-deprecating humour, picking fun at his mis-spent youth, Barrowcliffe captures his adolescence and obsession with dungeons and dragons (at the expense of everything else!) so well that I could see him and his over-inflated teenage ego sat with his fellow D&D-ers rolling dice oblivious to the rest of the world. As one of his contemporaries and having grown up in England I can attest to how well he captured that time and filled it with humour.

When a cop's body is found burned and decapitated, the last thing Andy Carpenter expected is for a stranger to waltz into his office and admit to the crime. For the wise-cracking millionaire defense attorney suffering from "lawyer's block", the case looks like a no-brainer...until the cops pick up another suspect: Andy's lead P.I., Laurie Collins, who happens to be the love of his life.

I read this book by Zuiker first. You really have to suspend belief in this book, but it was quite fun to listen to. I would recommend reading only one of these Murder on Mystery Island books.
