Armed only with a frying pan and her common sense, Tiffany Aching, a young witch-to-be, is all that stands between the monsters of Fairyland and the warm, green Chalk country that is her home. Forced into Fairyland to seek her kidnapped brother, Tiffany allies herself with the Chalk's local Nac Mac Feegle, aka the Wee Free Men, a clan of sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men who are as fierce as they are funny.

While I love reading Pratchert, the voices in this audio book add so much more to the enjoyment! The reader does English, bored-English, and Scottish voices impeccably!

  • Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Fight Terrorism and Build Nations

In 1993 Greg Mortenson was the exhausted survivor of a failed attempt to ascend K2, an American climbing bum wandering emaciated and lost through Pakistan's Karakoram Himalaya. After he was taken in and nursed back to health by the people of an impoverished Pakistani village, Mortenson promised to return one day and build them a school. From that rash, earnest promise grew one of the most incredible humanitarian campaigns of our time: Greg Mortenson's one-man mission to counteract extremism by building schools, especially for girls, throughout the breeding ground of the Taliban.

    "Should be required reading"

This book should be required reading by all high schools, government officials, military and their families! In today's world, we hear so much about Muslim extremists and how they have hurt the US. This book tells us how we can best fight the extremists -- through education, and specifically through education of women, while reminding us the most Muslims are just like you and me.

From the author of the number-one national best seller Three Cups of Tea, the continuing story of this determined humanitarian and the schools he has established. In this dramatic first-person narrative, Greg Mortenson recounts his relentless, ongoing efforts to establish schools for girls in Afghanistan; his extensive work in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan after a massive earthquake; and the unique ways he has built relationships with Islamic clerics, militia commanders, and tribal leaders.

Cathleen says: "Better than Three Cups of Tea"
    "Great Book!"
    Overall

This amazing story is one for our times. My only downgrade on the book is the narrator -- it is distracting to hear a first person narrative written by a man read by a woman. However, if you can get by that, this book should be required reading/listening by all government officials and military.

    "Bad audio"

The fact that Ed reads this book was a big draw for me: I had read an excerpt in Reader's Digest and wanted to get the whole background on Ed & Johnny. I should have been warned by the fact that the highest quality on this book is a 2--the audio was excruciating to listen to--and the music was even worse. However, it's a great story--but one that might be better read than listened to.

Ten years after the publication of Wicked, beloved novelist Gregory Maguire returns at last to the land of Oz. There he introduces us to Liir, an adolescent boy last seen hiding in the shadows of the castle after Dorothy did in the Witch. Bruised, comatose, and left for dead in a gully, Liir is shattered in spirit as well as in form. But he is tended at the Cloister of Saint Glinda by the silent novice called Candle, who wills him back to life with her musical gifts.

Vernette says: "A good writer does not a good reader make"
    "Great Book--bad music"
    Overall

Great story, well read. But the music between the chapters needs to be toned down. Don't listen to it without having access to volume control!
If you like Wicked, you need to continue the experience by listening to Son of a Witch.
