Chronic pain affects more than 8.5 million people in the UK and costs the economy 18 billion pounds a year in lost work days; while an estimated 30%, or up to 70 million people, also suffer in the US, where it’s said to be the most costly health problem. Yet, according to one study, two out of three people say that their medication is not always adequate, while 96% of GPs believe there is significant room for improving treatment.

  • Napoleon's Buttons: 17 Molecules That Changed History

Napoleon's Buttons is the fascinating account of 17 groups of molecules that have greatly influenced the course of history. These molecules provided the impetus for early exploration, and made possible the voyages of discovery that ensued. The molecules resulted in grand feats of engineering and spurred advances in medicine and law; they determined what we now eat, drink, and wear. A change as small as the position of an atom can lead to enormous alterations in the properties of a substance.

ANELLO says: "Wish one of the authors would have read this book"

If you could sum up Napoleon's Buttons in three words, what would they be?

Great read, fabulous info, good narrative, history we never get in school.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Napoleon's Buttons?

The tin button fell apart under severe winter condition causing Napoleon's defeat - how simple.

    Any additional comments?

Not recommended read for simpletons devoid of education in sciences, history and deprived of intellectual curiosity, I believe.

  • Fatal Deception: The Untold Story of Asbestos - Why It Is Still Legal and Still Killing Us

At first glance, the events in this book may seem equal parts science fiction and legal thriller. Unfortunately, this is a true story of blinding greed, cruel deceit, unfortunate circumstance, and powerful human tragedy. It has villains and heroes, but it does not yet have a good ending. It is the story of asbestos in America.

Cindy says: "a stilted reading of a preachy book"

If you could sum up Fatal Deception in three words, what would they be?

    Very relevant warning.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fatal Deception?

The whole story is a shocking account of ignorance as to the dangers of asbestos and the fact that nobody cares to stop that horrible tragedy.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

It does seem to be a good scrip for a movie. Erin Brokovich would make a good leading actress.

    Any additional comments?

My British friend just got diagnosed with mesothelioma, to everyone's big surprise since all his life he was never exposed to it, he is a writer. Or we might only think so?????

Again and again, microbes have shaped our health, our genetics, our history, our culture, our politics, even our religion and ethics. This book reveals much that scientists and cultural historians have learned about the pervasive interconnections between infectious microbes and humans. It also considers what our ongoing fundamental relationship with infectious microbes might mean for the future of the human species.

I'll never see the world the same again.

I think of another eye-opener like
