  • Exit 9: A Project Eden Thriller, Book 2

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 25 mins)
    • By Brett Battles
    • Narrated By MacLeod Andrews
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Before, it was just a test, a little demonstration to see if the virus worked. It did, and so much better than its creators could have ever hoped. But the testing phase is over. It’s time for Project Eden to take the next step. If its members have their way, humanity is about to get a reboot. It’s up to Daniel Ash and the others in the outnumbered resistance to keep the Project from severely downsizing mankind.

Amanda says: "Well now you are hooked."
    "Disappointingly Formulaic and Pointless!"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

There's no account for taste. But, I'd think if you've never, ever, read or listened to anything before in your life, have no reference point whatsoever, it might work.

Would you ever listen to anything by Brett Battles again?

No. The sad thing is that I've read all his "Cleaner" Quinn's novels and enjoyed them immensely. But, when he migrated to the apocalypse bandwagon, he lost me. It reminds me when Schwartzenegger and Stalone tried their hands at comedy. Disaster!

Would you be willing to try another one of Macleod Andrews’s performances?

Absolutely. I'm listening to him right now and enjoying it very much. It's not his fault the story sucks.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger and Disappointment. I felt cheated by buying this load of crap!

    Any additional comments?

    Live and learn!

  • Classic Tales of Werewolves

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By George MacDonald, Hugh Walpole, Bernard Capes, and others
    • Narrated By David Thorpe, Nigel Lambert, Liza Ross, and others

A wolf howls through the forests of Transylvania, the murky graveyards of H.P. Lovecraft, the mythic marshes of Count Stenbock and the ghostly vaults of English cathedrals in these timeless stories read by award-winning actors from The Story Circle company.

Die Falknerin says: "Ten tales of lycanthropy, beautifully performed"
Where does Classic Tales of Werewolves rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The best Horror Tales I've listened to.

What other book might you compare Classic Tales of Werewolves to and why?

The Vampire Archives. A compilation of thematic horror histories that span over a century written by the masters of the genre.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

The ability to create the atmosphere and to impart the protagonists feelings and state of mind in the correct dialogues and dialects of the intended time period.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    The Werewolf Chronicles

    Any additional comments?

    Great fun and great narrators!

  • The Troubled Man: A Kurt Wallander Mystery

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Henning Mankell, Laurie Thompson (translator)
    • Narrated By Robin Sachs
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Håkan von Enke, a retired naval officer, disappears during a walk in a forest near Stockholm. Wallander is not officially involved in the investigation, but he is personally affected—von Enke is his daughter’s father-in-law—and Wallander is soon interfering in matters that are not his responsibility. He is confounded by the information he uncovers, which hints at elaborate Cold War espionage.

Rebecca says: "I'd expect nothing less..."
    "Depressing and Convoluted!"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Would you recommend The Troubled Man to your friends? Why or why not?

    No. Too Depressing and Uninteristing.

Have you listened to any of Robin Sachs’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Robin Sachs can read the ingredients of a cooking recipe and sound interisting. He is a master.

Was The Troubled Man worth the listening time?

    Any additional comments?

Sad that Kurt Wallander has to fade away in this manner.

  • Watchers

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Dean Koontz
    • Narrated By J. Charles
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

From a top-secret government laboratory come two genetically altered life forms. One is a magnificent dog of astonishing intelligence. The other, a hybrid monster of a brutally violent nature. And both are on the loose....

Katie says: "Great book; so-so narrator"
    "Patheticaly Corny, Annoyingly Dull!"
What would have made Watchers better?

Nothing sort of re-writing this fiasco.

Would you ever listen to anything by Dean Koontz again?

    Probably not!

How could the performance have been better?

    Different narrator, at least!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Yes. The realization that Dean Koonts can't write crappy books,
and some narrator can induce suicide.

    Any additional comments?

This is the Worst Narrator I ever had the misfortune to listen to.

  • The Autobiography of Jack the Ripper

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 58 mins)
    • By James Carnac
    • Narrated By Mark Meadows, Christian Rodska

This memoir was recently discovered and appears to have been written in the 1920s by someone who asserts that he was Jack the Ripper. This person is James Willoughby Carnac, and this memoir was written shortly before his death. It is an account of his entire life, including a few short months in 1888 when he became the murderer known to posterity as Jack the Ripper.

    Amazon Customer says: "Absolutely Fascinating"
    "Disappointing Ending!"
What did you like best about The Autobiography of Jack the Ripper? What did you like least?

The story and the narrator, but for the last hour of the book, when, inexplicably, he proceeds to review and retell the previous 7 hours!? Why? What a waste!

Would you be willing to try another book from James Carnac? Why or why not?

    I'm not sure. See above.

What about Mark Meadows and Christian Rodska ’s performance did you like?

Great voices and interpretation of the characters.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

  • Dracula [Audible Edition]

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By Bram Stoker
    • Narrated By Alan Cumming, Tim Curry, Simon Vance, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

    N. Houghton says: "Gothic Horror Never Sounded So Good"
    "Tedious and Too Melodramatic!"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not. The narrative was too verbose and annoyingly melodramatic.

Would you recommend Dracula [Audible Edition] to your friends? Why or why not?

    No. Irritatingly slow and tiresome.

What three words best describe the narrators’s voice?

Did Dracula [Audible Edition] inspire you to do anything?

    To listen to another book.

    Any additional comments?

This audible production made me appreciate and admire even more the movie directors who make the movie Dracula so interesting in spite of Bram Stoker's boring narrative.

  • 11-22-63: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (30 hrs and 44 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By Craig Wasson

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Kelly says: "I Owe Stephen King An Apology"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would make it shorter and less melodramatic. This story should be a 15 hour narration, and not 30 very long hours! It became very tedious!

If you’ve listened to books by Stephen King before, how does this one compare?

Would you listen to another book narrated by Craig Wasson?

Could you see 11-22-63 being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    I hope not.

    Any additional comments?

Disappointed and now very suspicious of the great reviews and reviewers I read on Audible
and Amazon. I'll read them with a grain o salt from now on.

  • The Bat: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 43 mins)
    • By Jo Nesbo
    • Narrated By Sean Barrett
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Harry is out of his depth. Detective Harry Hole is meant to keep out of trouble. A young Norwegian girl taking a gap year in Sydney has been murdered, and Harry has been sent to Australia to assist in any way he can. He's not supposed to get too involved. When the team unearths a string of unsolved murders and disappearances, nothing will stop Harry from finding out the truth. The hunt for a serial killer is on, but the murderer will talk only to Harry. He might just be the next victim.

Charles Atkinson says: "Probably the best of this remarkable series."
    "Solid Performance..."
What made the experience of listening to The Bat the most enjoyable?

The Locale and Harry Hole's collected and analytical character

If you’ve listened to books by Jo Nesbo before, how does this one compare?

    Top Five

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brings the different accents/speech cadences and mannerisms of the the local peoples.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    A little too much gruffinesss.

    Any additional comments?

Looking forward to Jø Nesbø's next book, with, perhaps, Christopher Lane or Phil Gigante as narrators.

  • The Vampire Archives: The Most Complete Volume of Vampire Tales Ever Published

    • UNABRIDGED (61 hrs and 40 mins)
    • By Otto Penzler (editor), Kim Newman (foreword), Neil Gaiman (preface), and others
    • Narrated By Scott Brick, Jonathan Cowley, Erik Davies

The Vampire Archives is the biggest, hungriest, undeadliest collection of vampire stories, as well as the most comprehensive bibliography of vampire fiction ever assembled. Dark, stormy, and delicious, once it sinks its teeth into you there’s no escape.

    Kang, D. says: "Fabulous!"
    "The Bible of Vampire Stories"
Would you listen to The Vampire Archives again? Why?

No, for I don't listen to, read or watch the same movie twice. So much to listen to... So little time!

Who was your favorite character and why?

No one. Too many to keep track!

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Tales of the Vampire

    Any additional comments?

Is there a sequel to this book?
