Hockenberry is my favorite character, the average guy, in over his head. He just wants to survive and at the same time, screw the gods.
Not my favorite narrator, Simon Vance would have been a better choice.
Homer and the rest would probably hate this story, but I liked it. Simmons is not afraid to take on Dickens, Homer, Hemingway, or anybody else. He makes the average writer look bad, sometimes I think he is just showing off. Time will tell if people are still reading his books two hundred years from now. Classic Simmons, playing havoc with the classics.
Entertaining is what I would call this book. If your driving down the road trying to stay interested in the book, then the book is a failure. Not this one, not this series so far. I am starting the third book. And can say I am happy with the series.
Mark Boyette does a great job with this book. Well preformed, and easy listening.
In the pendulum of my reading, listening interests, Larson has brought me back to sci-fy for awhile. It's always great to find a new writer that you can enjoy.
Atypical alien invasion
A classic sci- fi that stands the test of time. Reminds me of all the old sci-fi classics from the forties, fifties and sixties.... With a twist.
The ending is a surprise, this is not just another alien invasion story from the fifties.
Clark is not know for his character development, or classic story telling, but the originality of this story is perfect. If you want a quick read this one should be on your to do list.
I have read several mediocre reviews about this book and I think they are way off base. Yes I would recommend this series to friends and family.
Great story, plenty of action, moves well did not get bogged down kept my interest.
Overall I liked this book as well as the first book in this series. Can't wait for the next installment.
This book is classic Simmons, he likes to take the classics, turn them inside out and spin them, dice them, cook them and serve them with gravy and potatoes . If you don't mind Homer spinning in his grave, you will like this book.
I like Dan Simmons as an author, he keeps turning out great stories time after time. I've read several bad reviews of this book, don't understand why. It could be me. For what it's worth, I liked it, great story, another winner.
Abercrombie has twisted hero's, this book is dark, almost biblical violence and epic battles.
He maintains continuity of the characters, some stories I have listened to, the prefomers have changed the voices. Pacey uses the same voice for each person from start of the first book till the last chapter in the last book. Amazing!,.
I listened to this series over a period of two weeks. Very violent and dark, too much at once, I think I will take a little break from Abercrombie before I go back to the mud.
I will listen to " The magician's land " agian. I have this trilogy on cd and in my Audible library . Mark Bramhall does a great job bringing this book to life.
I have never read the Harry Potter books but have heard this series of books compared to them as the " adult version" of Harry Potter.
This book moves fast, could easily been thirty hours long, I would love to have read the unedited version. I think one of my favorite scenes was Alice's meltdown and recovery.
A two day listen on the road, great entertainment. Love the book and the series...worth a credit.
Great series but felt the last book was a quick wrap up. I wished it was longer, seemed to be rushed and left me wanting the story to continue. Nobody writes like Grossman, his style stands alone and Mark Bramhall's performance is perfectl.
Worth a credit
I think Abercrombie could be compared to Sanderson, Rothfuss, Simmons, Jordan.......
I can't imagine anyone else doing a better job. He brings the book to life, adds to the story, is not a distraction. Great job!!!
It is funny and sad, dark....I would not make it in Abercrombie's world.
Great book, happy to add this series to my collection. Well worth a credit.
This is the third book in the Monster Hunter series, very entertaining, great story .
Oliver Wyman's performance is great, he is an asset to this story.
if your a Jim Butcher fan and you have ran out of Dresden files books to read. This series is a good substitute, and just as entertaining as any I have listened to recently.
Intellengent, well written
this book has a different look to the future of mankind. I think I could compare it to some of A C Clark's concepts altought the writing style is better and modern.
Great accents, complimented the book...
I was pleasantly surprised that this book set in Africa, it was good to read a book with an international setting.
I read this book when it came out, liked it better than the audio version.
this is a dark and violent book, clever and fun and dark and sad.
i didn't care for this performance, I don't think he matched this book's dark and tortured content.
yes, read thru these books quickly, took about two days to listen to it.
this plot is done over and over, young man's rise to power despite his tragic childhood. bloody and violent content. I like it when I first read the book but didn't enjoy the audible version.
