  • The Myths of Nutrition and Fitness

    • ORIGINAL (3 hrs and 13 mins)

We all want to live long, healthy, and happy lives. But the path to achieve this-fitness and nutrition-is fraught with popular yet dangerously misleading myths about personal wellness. How do you separate the fact from the fiction? How can you recognize when you're doing your body more harm than good? Scientific knowledge has greatly expanded our understanding of how the human body works, laying many previously held ideas about fitness and nutrition to rest.

What was most disappointing about The Great Courses’s story?

I was unable to find the date of the recording, but most of his nutritional information is completely outdated and WRONG. It's a myth that "a calorie is a calorie" and yet he is saying that to say otherwise is a myth. Try reading FAT CHANCE or GRAIN BRAIN instead. The fitness part was okay, mostly common sense.

Robert A. Heinlein is widely and justly regarded as the greatest practitioner of the art of science fiction who has ever lived. Here are two of his greatest short novels: Gulf, in which the greatest super-spy of them all is revealed as the leader of a league of supermen and women who can’t quite decide what to do with the rest of us. And Lost Legacy, in which it is proved that we are all members of that league - or would be, if we but had eyes to see.

I enjoyed the first story, but could not get into the second one. I'll probably have another go at it one day, but I have too many books lined up right now.

At last the CD audio programme is now available as a download. Do you want to lose weight? Have you tried diets and failed? Do you want a completely new approach? A gastric band is a radical, surgical operation that reduces the available space in the stomach.

Too bad this didn't come in stereo, because you miss part of the experience. Even so, it was amazing. Third day and I hardly think about eating.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Too little, too late.

What three words best describe Soneela Nankani’s performance?

    Okay. Mispronounces Indian words.

    Any additional comments?

It was hard work getting through this book because it was an emotional downer almost all the way through.

  • Great Catherine: The Life of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia

Prize-winning historian and biographer, Carolly Erickson has created an eminently readable biography that recognizes the humanity of Great Catherine—Empress of Russia—with her majesty and immense capability. Dispelling some of the myths surrounding her voracious sexual appetite, the biographer portrays Catherine as a lonely woman far ahead of her time—achieving greatness in an era when women were executed on a husband’s whim.

Kathi says: "An amazingly woman's life story"

What made the experience of listening to Great Catherine the most enjoyable?

Davina Porter could make anything interesting - even a laundry list! That said, the author has done a wonderful job with the subject matter and it's an enjoyable read.

Look beyond the abstract dates and figures, kings and queens, and battles and wars that make up so many historical accounts. Over the course of 48 richly detailed lectures, Professor Garland covers the breadth and depth of human history from the perspective of the so-called ordinary people, from its earliest beginnings through the Middle Ages.

This course was a delight. Without a plot, it was easy to pick up after a break, which was important with such a long recording. The instructor did an outstanding job of making the mundane come to life. You will never look at history in the same way. A bargain at one point!
