  • Earth Awakens: The First Formic War, Book 3

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 48 mins)

    • Narrated By Stefan Rudnicki, Stephen Hoye, Arthur Morey, and others

Nearly 100 years before the events of Orson Scott Card’s best-selling novel Ender’s Game, humans were just beginning to step off Earth and out into the Solar System. A thin web of ships in both asteroid belts; a few stations; a corporate settlement on Luna. No one had seen any sign of other space-faring races; everyone expected that First Contact, if it came, would happen in the future, in the empty reaches between the stars. Then a young navigator on a distant mining ship saw something moving too fast, heading directly for our sun.

Would you listen to Earth Awakens again? Why?

Yes. To refresh my mind when the next trilogy comes out in a few years (follow up to this). And it is an excellent listen.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Earth Awakens?

When Victor was walking around the formic mother ship right in front of the enemy. Danger Danger Danger!

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

Even though the character not most likeable, Lem is fantasticly weasally sounding.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Victor and his Mom reuniting.

    Any additional comments?

Can't wait for follow up to this series which will be The Second formic war series. Have listen to about 12 Ender-related OSC books and they are mostly excellent.

Would you listen to 'Til Death Do Us Part again? Why?

No. One time was sufficient although I did have to relisten to several parts to grasp the story and see if I overlooked something. I listen to about 25,000 pages of audio books each year and it is very rare that I have to do this (relisten). Mostly I felt that the author was trying to tie up too many loose ends and did not explain why things occured. Also, the payoff occured about 75% into the book and how the deed was accomplished was never explained....it just happened. More specifically the Shaman resolution was left vague. Perhaps it is my fault as it has been a while since listening to prior book?

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I liked the very very very end (last 15 minutes) only as a back story to most of the prior 5 books but again I was not exacty sure what was going on prior to that in the Epilogue. Almost like he left out a chapter or two...

Have you listened to any of Sean Runnette’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. the prior 5 books in this series. Always excellent. One of the reasons that I stuck with this series even through the lesser books.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

Humor was still strong point as well as the Journal entry narrative tool.
