Nearly 100 years before the events of Orson Scott Card’s best-selling novel Ender’s Game, humans were just beginning to step off Earth and out into the Solar System. A thin web of ships in both asteroid belts; a few stations; a corporate settlement on Luna. No one had seen any sign of other space-faring races; everyone expected that First Contact, if it came, would happen in the future, in the empty reaches between the stars. Then a young navigator on a distant mining ship saw something moving too fast, heading directly for our sun.

Charles Rohrig says: "Sets the Stage for Ender's Game"
    "this series is going downhill"

the actual writing still feels like OSC, but the imagination put into this book doesn't feel remotely close to the first ender series. it's at the point where despite reading the original and a few of the shadow series books, i'm not even sure i'll listen to book #4. :(

When an elite team of specialists receives a long-awaited first contact from an alien race, it’s nothing like what they’d imagined. The "gifts," from a long-dead but seemingly benevolent alien race, have been sent to help humanity defend itself against an imminent threat. It’s clear that the gifts are intended to help, but at what price? Caught in the middle is Sam Steele, a high-level programmer and veteran with a tragic past, up against the arrogant, intransigent Colonel Eric Web, who considers Steele a loose cannon and is most concerned with giving the United States an edge in the upcoming battle.

Matthew says: "This Gift is abit of a mess"

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

Donnchadh and Gwalcmai were birthed on a far-flung planet in the Milky Way - a human breeding colony with the purpose of churning out disposable foot soldiers. But the masters of the colony, the Airlia, created humans with one fatal flaw: an insatiable thirst for freedom. Though Donnchadh and Gwalcmai become God-killers in the bloody revolt against their seemingly omnipotent creators and captors, their planet is already doomed.

Six months have passed since the release of Nexus 5. The world is a different, more dangerous place. In the USA, the freedom fighters of the Post-Human Liberation Front use Nexus to turn men and women into human time bombs aimed at the President and his allies. The first blows in the war between human and post-human have been struck.

I found myself a little bored at times with this and nexus. there is definitely the set up for a third book, but I'm not sure I will listen to it. there were great parts to this book, but there was a lot of flat and boring parts too. I thought this was going to be a book that I enjoyed re-listening to, but I won't be.
nonetheless, it is a very interesting concept.

this is a great sci-fi book with some action and fun characters. it kept me interested in finding out what happens next throughout the book.
in addition to the book being fun, it presents a question of what would we do if we (humans) had this technology. i can't wait to read the sequel.
if this book reminds me of influx, daemon and freedom TM. (highly recommended.)

At an exclusive school somewhere outside of Arlington, Virginia, students aren't taught history, geography, or mathematics - at least not in the usual ways. Instead, they are taught to persuade. Here the art of coercion has been raised to a science. Students harness the hidden power of language to manipulate the mind and learn to break down individuals by psychographic markers in order to take control of their thoughts. The very best will graduate as "poets": adept wielders of language who belong to a nameless organization that is as influential as it is secretive.

... and then it seems the editor took a break halfway through. i really liked the ideas in this book and it had some very creative ideas, but then it becomes hard to follow because it jumps around a bit too much. this made the book lose some of its steam. still, it's definitely worth a listen despite this.

book #2 for me was decent, but was so "blah", i didn't even write a review. it was entertaining but when it was over, i felt no excitement or ... anything. it was just done. in book #3, there seemed to be more emotion and though put into the story. i feel as though it could have been a few hours longer and parts were rushed, but it was good enough to be happy with the purchase.

i really enjoyed this book and practically listened straight through (was on a plane). it has a similar feel to daemon/freedom TM, but has some parts that are disturbingly creative. i was blown away. there were a few areas i would have liked to see played out differently, but i have no hesitation recommending this book. mr suarez has basically hooked me into buying anything he writes. well played, sir.
if you've not read anything by DS, i recommend daemon/freedom TM (2 part series) over this, but i can't see being disappointed in this book. the character development probably lacks a little bit, but the story & problems presented are gripping enough where it hardly matters.
