I like Roy Dotrice a lot but I prefer John Lee as a reader. Very clear and easy to understand with good characterization. As for the book, I find it definitely as good as the three previous ones. Although we do spend time with many unloved characters, the character development is very good. One of the great strengths of A Song of Ice and Fire is it's non-traditional approach to fantasy : it's non-linear and nobody is all good or bad.
In my opinion, this is one of the best fantasy series ever written and I can't wait for the next book to come out !!!
This is a terrific trilogy for any age (not just young adults) and I enjoyed it hugely and many of the previous reviews give a good indication why so I won't go there. I would just like to highlight that I loved the narrator of this audiobook and think she did a fantastic job. When the three books were finished, I was sad not just because the story ended but also because I wouldn't be hearing her anymore. One of the best series of audiobooks I have ever listened to (and I have been a platinum member of audible for years...) with a really great narrator !!!
The sequel to "The Last Kingdom" is just as excellent as the first volume and the narrator is phenomenal : priests, monks, warriors, and kings all come alive (really alive : close your eyes and you can touch them...). The combination of a good book and a great narrator is what makes audiobooks so much fun and it doesn't get better than this !!!
I just can't wait for the next volume to be released...
This is one of the best audiobooks I ever listened to. The book is a great mix of action, adventure and history but the narrator makes it all really come alive. Really really great narration... The characters have come so alive for me that I dream of some of them. Uhtred (the main hero) is memorable but Ragnar is unforgettable. I would give this book 1000 stars if it were possible !!!
I drive two hours per day and so have become quite a recurring customer at Audible.com . I've listened to many books but this one truly captivated me, made me drive real slow so as to remain with the character as long as possible. It also really made me ponder on what binds families, people, societies and on what keeps us going in our daily lives (and what is simply pretending to keep on going)...
Smithy Ide has a simple life with maybe a bit more tragedy in it than most people have. But not that much more... How he copes with it, how he transforms himself, how he listens to others, it all renders him highly endearing. The portrayal of America, it's great beauty and it's occasional ugliness, is also very strong. Ron Mclarty has done an incredible job, first in writing this great novel and second in reading it in such masterful way. The best audiobook I ever listened to !!!!!
I enjoyed the book and contrary to many of the reviews here, I find the narrator did a very decent job. The plot is a bit thin and the characters are a little stiff but the premise of a grail quest remains fun.
