Thailand, Laos, and Burma have been known as the "Golden Triangle" because of their historically prominent role in the drug trade. For centuries, these countries have produced the opium that has attracted traders from Europe and elsewhere. Economics, religion, and politics combine to make this area not only important but also, to the western mind, exotic.

"The Golden Triangle | [Bertil Lintner]"
    Overall

This is very informative, though dated. It gives the history of Myanmar (Burma) and the Golden Triangle region.

The rise to global predominance of Western civilization is the single most important historical phenomenon of the past five hundred years. All over the world, an astonishing proportion of people now work for Western-style companies, study at Western-style universities, vote for Western-style governments, take Western medicines, wear Western clothes, and even work Western hours. Yet six hundred years ago the petty kingdoms of Western Europe seemed unlikely to achieve much more than perpetual internecine warfare. It was Ming China or Ottoman Turkey that had the look of world civilizations.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This audiobook gives a good overview of the different factors that make up a strong civilization or culture. Although the writer is a Westerner, he does show the strengths (and weaknesses) of Western culture. I live in Asia and have found myself asking some of the same questions. It affirms some of my thoughts on this. This is only an introduction to the topic, but it is a good summary.

What other book might you compare Civilization to and why?

Conquest and Cultures by Thomas Sowell

Sproul's survey of the ongoing impact of history's most influential philosophies urges listeners to take prevailing cultural mind-sets seriously...because ideas do have consequences. The greatest thinkers of all time are impacting us still. From public-policy decisions and current laws to world events, theology, the arts, education, and even conversations between friends, history's most influential philosophies have wrought massive consequences on nearly everything we see, think, and do.

This is a good historical overview of philosophy. I wish it addressed more of the consequences, but overall, it was enjoyable.
