Miles Vorkosigan makes his debut in this frenetic coming-of-age tale. At age 17, Miles is allowed to take the entrance exams to the elite military academy; he passes the written but manages, through miscalculation in a moment of anger, to break both his legs on the obstacle course, washing out before he begins. "Delightful and engaging"

I was not sure what to expect from this book. I read some of the reviews which I always find helpful. This book is a delightful blend of science fiction and fantasy. I think everyone can identify with the young Baron as he struggles to find his place and purpose in life. He has delusions of granduer but no real prospects of accomplishing them. He has real physical problems but his strength of character and sense of humor bring him the recognition and respect he seeks. He blunders and bungles his way successfully and has you cheering him on for his guts and personal values. Would that we all were so endowed. A great read for young and old.

  • Leviathan Wakes

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By James S.A. Corey
    • Narrated By Jefferson Mays
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

James S.A. Corey delivers compelling SF that ranks with the best in the field. In Leviathan Wakes, ice miner Jim Holden is making a haul from the rings of Saturn when he and his crew encounter an abandoned ship, the Scopuli. Uncovering a terrifying secret, Jim bears the weight of impending catastrophe. At the same time, a detective has been hired by well-heeled parents to find a missing girl, and the investigator’s search leads him right to the Scopuli.

Ethan M. says: "Fun hard SF action with a blue collar bent"
"Perfect blend of Science Fiction and Detective"
If you could sum up Leviathan Wakes in three words, what would they be?

    Intriguing, action-packed, surpirsing

What was one of the most memorable moments of Leviathan Wakes?

On Eros when Miller and Holden realize what is happening and their escape back to the ship that was supposed to leave them behind.

Have you listened to any of Jefferson Mays’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to other performances by Jefferson Mays but would select a book to based on his intrepretive reading. He has a way of seamlessly transitioning you from one scene to another that makes is seem like a tale you are telling yourself.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Miller found Juliette Mao and was able to get through to her in her transformed state. In his sacrifice he found redemption.

    Any additional comments?

A terrific story line. I am glad there are sequels. This is just too good a story to end in one book. Great read.

  • Night Pleasures: A Dark-Hunter Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 12 mins)
    • By Sherrilyn Kenyon
    • Narrated By Carrington MacDuffie
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In Night Pleasures, Kyrian of Thrace - an immortal who protects humans from vampires - wakes up one morning handcuffed to the one thing that can scare him: a conservative woman in a button-down shirt. But Amanda Devereaux turns out to be his perfect partner for hunting down a deadly foe, and for helping him to regain his soul and learn that love doesn't have to bite.

    Erich says: "REALLY!!??"
    "Graphic romanticists"

The basis of the story in interesting. I found it to be a titillating romance story wrapped in emotional pschology of relationships, wrapped in fantasy lore.. Not what I was looking for but I thought I would give it a try.

  • Altered Carbon

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By Richard K. Morgan
    • Narrated By Todd McLaren
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

    "Perfect Blend"

Wow! The perfect blend of my favorite reading, SciFi and detective mystery. Very creative view of a future world and human activity in it. Encompasses all of our weaknesses and magnifies the best and the worst in human nature. I look forward to the next one. Graphic sexually but not gratutiously so. If that makes you squeamish then this is not for you. I loved the reader. Very talented writer and perfectly complimented by the reader. Wow!I can hardly wait to listen to the next in the series.
