  • Freakonomics: Revised Edition

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 55 mins)

Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He is a much-heralded scholar who studies the riddles of everyday life, from cheating and crime to sports and child-rearing, and whose conclusions turn the conventional wisdom on its head. Thus the new field of study contained in this audiobook: Freakonomics. Levitt and co-author Stephen J. Dubner show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives: how people get what they want, or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing.

Shackleton says: "Good, but be careful"
    "Just an OK book."
    Overall

A few interesting and informative pieces of information but the book failed to meet my expectations. Narration is good but there is some repetition as if the author wanted to stretch the book.

One late fall Sunday in southern Minnesota, a farmer brings a load of soybeans to a local grain elevator - and a young man hits him on the head with a steel bar, drops him into the grain bin, waits until he's sure he's dead, and then calls the sheriff to report the "accident." Suspicious, the sheriff calls in Virgil Flowers, who quickly breaks the kid down...and the next day the boy's found hanging in his cell. Remorse? Virgil isn't so sure....

    Bob says: "EXCELLENT!"
    "Slow and dreary."
    Overall

I had to force myself to finish this book. A bit of action here and there but no trills, suspense or a twist; just lots of dialogue with a rater flat and boring narration.

In his latest innovative novel, the award-winning author evokes the dazzling Tang Dynasty of 8th-century China in a story of honor and power. Inspired by the glory and power of Tang dynasty China, Guy Gavriel Kay has created a masterpiece. It begins simply. Shen Tai, son of an illustrious general serving the Emperor of Kitai, has spent two years honoring the memory of his late father by burying the bones of the dead from both armies at the site of one of his father's last great battles.

    Mike says: "Impressive!"
    "No what I expected"
    Overall

As always; the narration from Simon Vance was absolutely fantastic. The book is beautifully written as a tale of fantasy, beauty, honor and romance. However, listening to the entire book was very difficult because in some parts it was very slow and boring and in general very few exciting events took place throughout the book. I wish Audible would release a new version of SHOGUN read by Simon Vance.

  • Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

In his landmark best seller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant, in the blink of an eye, that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept?

I truly enjoyed listening to the book. The materials as well as the reading from the author are both excellent. It was amazing to learn about the number of things we do or say without even knowing why we do it.

Mikael Blomkvist, crusading journalist and publisher of the magazine Millennium, has decided to publish a story exposing an extensive sex trafficking operation between Eastern Europe and Sweden, implicating well-known and highly placed members of Swedish society, business, and government. On the eve of publication, the two reporters responsible for the story are brutally murdered.

    "Unique and Refreshing"
    Overall

This book will keep you guessing. It is written with eloquence and it leads the listener into a web of intrigue. A word of advice for any listener would be to write down names as the story moves forward; the names are mostly Swedish, German and it was a bit difficult to keep track of the names until I began to write them down. Waiting patiently for the 3rd book.

When Hackberry Holland became sheriff of a tiny Texas town near the Mexican border, he'd hoped to leave certain things behind: his checkered reputation, his haunted dreams, and his obsessive memories of the good life with his late wife, Rie. But the discovery of the bodies of nine illegal aliens, machine-gunned to death and buried in a shallow grave behind a church, soon makes it clear that he won't escape so easily.

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

Great story, well written and it gets better as you listen. The narrator does an incredible
job building up the story and the characters. I Can’t wait to listen to the sequel.

    "Questionable Advice"
    Overall

As a Professional Procurement and Sales Manager, some of the advice given in this book is questionable. The writer has the sales profile of someone that would have a difficult time getting an appointment with me. Many of the tips are absolute rubbish and look as if were made up as he wrote the book.
