Dubbed the American Tolkien by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the number-one New York Times best-selling author delivers the fifth book in his spellbinding landmark series - as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire.

Where does A Dance with Dragons rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Very near the top. The story is very complex and builds off of the previous books well.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Dance with Dragons?

    Everything with Tyrion

Did Roy Dotrice do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

He seemed to forget the voices he had chosen so consistently throughout the first 4 books. It made it a little hard to get into the characters in the same way I had before.

  • Call of Cthulhu and Other Stories

At the heart of these stories, as with all the best of Lovecraft’s work, is the belief that the Earth was once inhabited by powerful and evil gods, just waiting for the chance to recolonise their planet. Cthulhu is one such god, lurking deep beneath the sea until called into being by cult followers who – like all humans – know not what they do.

Where does Call of Cthulhu and Other Stories rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Definitely top 10.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Call of Cthulhu and Other Stories?

There were several great moments, but I think the most memorable would be the description of r'lyeh when the sailors discover it. I have always liked descriptive language and Lovecraft's command of English is really demonstrated throughout the work.

What does William Roberts bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He is without a doubt, the perfect narrator for these types of stories. His reading made the stories really come alive.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I now understand the popularity of Lovecraft and the reverence that people have for his work. Great stuff.

Civil War veteran John Carter is transported to a dying planet, where he must elude capture by giant green barbarians to rescue a Martian princess from certain doom. In this landmark of science fiction, the myths and mystery of the red planet supply a vibrant backdrop for a swashbuckling epic.

    Story
What made the experience of listening to John Carter in 'A Princess of Mars' the most enjoyable?

The narrator is superb and really sells the characters well. The story itself is the quintessential hero story and demonstrates the characteristics of a classic true hero, not the popular modern anti-hero that has become so prevalent.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Definitely the main character: John Carter. Unlike the "hero" in so many modern stories, John Carter represents traits that are ideals. He is painted as the hero that people should want to aspire to be and I find that very refreshing and inspiring.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

again, John Carter. Scott just sells the confidence and self-awareness that seems so central to the character.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

many many. The fact that the ending had me yelling "Noooo!" in my car really speaks to the writing ability of Burroughs. I simply HAD to get the next book in the series immediately and learn what happened next.

Would you listen to How to Win Friends & Influence People again? Why?

I plan to. I think the book will prove invaluable in helping me become better at relating to and dealing with people. Listening to it again will help concrete the principles in my memory.

What did you like best about this story?

How to Win Friends... really helps explain a lot about human behavior and helped me understand better why some people do and say what they do. It also helped me learn how to better approach those with whom I am having difficulty to at the very least smooth things over and at best win them to my point of view.

Which character – as performed by Andrew MacMillan – was your favorite?

no characters in the book really unless you count the example stories

What did you learn from How to Win Friends & Influence People that you would use in your daily life?

Vital communication skills. I can not emphasize enough how valuable I think this book will be. The principles even helped me better understand my own motivations and behaviors. I would almost say this is a mandatory read.

If you could sum up Prince of Thorns in three words, what would they be?

    intense, thrilling, fantastic

Who was your favorite character and why?

    main character: Jorg Ancrath

Have you listened to any of James Clamp’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listened to "King of Thorns" also performed by Clamp. It was also very good. His ability to make the different characters discernible from one another really helps the story.

    Any additional comments?

This is an excellent book. I would highly recommend it to other listeners who like complex stories and aren't afraid of a very visceral experience. There is a lot of violence, but it fits with the character development and adds to the experience of the story.

    Fantastic narrator performance.
