This modern morality tale by gifted writer and speaker Andy Andrews teaches seven fundamental strategies for creating a successful life. Much like the best-selling books by Og Mandino, this unique narrative is a blend of entertaining fiction, allegory, and inspiration. Storyteller Andy Andrews gives a front-row seat for one man's journey of a lifetime. David Ponder has lost his job and the will to live.

For most of the book I have mixed feelings about it, but toward the end is where the author really lost me. I thought the different stories/visits were pretty good, with some of the morals at the end of each section a bit over the top. It was the close parallels to Christianity and the random departures where I stopped listening. (Spoiler Alert...) When the angel mentioned the eternal punishment was where the person was chained to a mirror to watch over and over again all the things that they didn't do/take advantage of, that was it for me. Maybe if the arch-angel's name wasn't Gabriel and if he didn't refer to the Father, maybe then I could have equated the 7th visit to some made up fantasyland, but being a Christian and seeing that condemned people are those who didn't fulfill all the things in their life that they could have seemed rather ridiculous. I know it's just a story, but the truth is that those condemned by God are those who have broken God's law not those who didn't pray long enough to get a mattress or find the cure for some disease.

What ensues-through hilarious encounters with all manner of livestock and colorful local characters-is a crash course in sustainable agriculture. Pritchard's biggest ally is his renegade father, who initially questions his son's career choice and rejects organic foods for sugary mainstream fare.

Uncle Tom's Cabin is centered on the character of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave around whom the stories of other characters - both fellow slaves and slave owners - revolve. This emotional novel portrays the reality of slavery while also stressing that Christian love can defeat something as damaging as enslavement of fellow human beings. Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling book in the 19th century, and second best-selling following the Bible.

Have you listened to any of Sean Crisden’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I thought he did a decent job at the voices of the different characters. Although, at times he sounded very "white", especially after talking like one of the slaves. ... who knows, maybe that was a purposeful literary device. :-)

    Any additional comments?

I didn't realize until after I started listening to the book that it was the best selling novel of the 19th century. The story is good, although at times it can meander. I can see why this book would drive home the immorality of slavery, and become unpopular in the South (and probably in the North as well).

From farmer Joel Salatin's point of view, life in the 21st century just ain't normal. In Folks, This Ain't Normal, he discusses how far removed we are from the simple, sustainable joy that comes from living close to the land and the people we love.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    Definitely.

    Any additional comments?

I liked that this audiobook was narrated by Joel Salatin. He personalized it in a way that only an author could. This book is eye-opening for people who don't know what a mess that well-intentioned government officials have created. But it also gives practical suggestions that anyone can do to make a change.
