Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No I would not. As the title says it is a great lecture series not a great story so the lecturer moves quite fast through the material with the expectation that the listener is well versed in military history. Not for the casual listener more for a student of the military. If that happens to be you well then this is a thorough course covering many characters and military strategies.

Would you be willing to try another book from The Great Courses? Why or why not?

I would buy more classes from the great courses. I own several and while some are hard to follow and keep up with the material I find most to be enlightening and very educational.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Fall of Greek states

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. You need a break to absorb the just taught materials before moving on to a new part of history and new countries and their battles.

Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching portrait of the bloody price of power, The Son is an utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American West through the lives of the McCulloughs, an ambitious family as resilient and dangerous as the land they claim. Spring, 1849: Eli McCullough is 13 years old when a marauding band of Comanches takes him captive. Brave and clever, Eli quickly adapts to life among the Comanches, learning their ways and waging war against their enemies, including white men - which complicates his sense of loyalty and understanding of who he is.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would. It was well researched and put together. The jumping between the times of the 4 generations works well as a foreshadow and this is how we get there puzzle. The changing of characters attitudes as they develop and grow but are rooted but their fundamental nature. Land, property, honor and the wide open west up for grabs.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Son?

The colonel living with the native Americans

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brings a sense of time and place and also converts proper scenic emotion without trying to pull tears from the listener

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The bigotry towards the landed Mexican family and the resulting mob mentality
