  • The Wal-Mart Effect

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Charles Fishman
    • Narrated By Alan Sklar

Drawing on unprecedented interviews with former Wal-Mart executives and a wealth of staggering dataincluding facts such as this: Americans spend $36 million an hour at Wal-Mart stores, this text is an intimate look at a business that is dramatically reshaping the American economy.

    Michael says: "Excellent, Balanced View"
    "Buy This Book"

Intriguing and thought-provoking. Regardless of how one feels about this massive retailer, its place in the global business community and its effect on our culture are undeniable. Whether a driving force on culture or merely a reflection of sociological change, the book provides significant food for thought and conversation. Well worth the time.

  • Jumper: Griffin's Story

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Steven Gould
    • Narrated By Ted Barker

Griffin has a secret. It's a secret that he's sworn to his parents to keep, and never tell. Griffin is a Jumper: a person who can teleport to any place he has ever been. He knows that the men who killed his parents were looking for him, and he must never let them find him. Griffin has only two goals: to survive, and to kill the people who want him dead. And a jumper bent on revenge is not going to let anything stand in his way.

    T. Holyoak says: "Definitely NOT for kids"
    "Don't Let Movie Fool You"

I was disappointed in character development in the movie and was prepared for mild disappointment here. Not so. You'll feel the child's pain and the anger as he ages. You'll be wanting more when it's over - the best way to end a good book.

  • Inkspell

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By Cornelia Funke
    • Narrated By Brendan Fraser

Although a year has passed, not a day goes by without Meggie thinking of Inkheart, the book whose characters became real. But for Dustfinger, the fire-eater brought into being from words, the need to return to the tale has become desperate. When he finds a crooked storyteller with the ability to read him back, Dustfinger leaves behind his young apprentice Farid and plunges into the medieval world of his past.

    Vanessa says: "Inkspell indeed"
    "Great Traveling Listen"

Just finished a 10-day driving vacation with family and this was an excellent listen for the entire group (ages 10-16 and adults). Having read/listened to the first book is helpful, but wasn't necessary as we had some who hadn't heard it yet. The story is self-contained enough to enthrall. Don't be dissuaded by the fact that it's classified as a children's book - it's a well-written and captivating tale.

  • Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Gregory Maguire
    • Narrated By John McDonough
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Suzn F says: "I was not sure for a while then......."
    "Almost Fully Satisfying"

Provided an intriguing back story to the well-known Wicked Witch of the West. Seemed as though some of the threads were insufficiently left hanging, however. At the conclusion, I was still wondering what I'd missed. Good listen, but mildly dis-satisfying.

  • Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner
    • Narrated By Stephen J. Dubner

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? What kind of impact did Roe v. Wade have on violent crime?

Timothy says: "Fascinating book, despite the title."
    "Up Then Down Then Up"

Starts well - capturing interest causing the reader to take new looks at generally accepted "facts" (conventional wisdom). But then begins to become too introspective, too personal, and generally too boring - I couldn't have listened to the middle of the book without driving, I'd have gone to sleep. The last section on names was interesting but drawn out with very little point. I'd recommend it because it can get mental juices flowing; but not an intriguing read for the entire length of the book.

  • The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

    • ABRIDGED (3 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By Malcolm Gladwell
    • Narrated By Malcolm Gladwell

Why did crime in New York drop so suddenly in the mid-90s? How does an unknown novelist end up a best-selling author? Why is teenage smoking out of control, when everyone knows smoking kills? What makes TV shows like Sesame Street so good at teaching kids how to read? Why did Paul Revere succeed with his famous warning?

    Zentaro says: "An interesting listen"
    "Gets Mental Gears Turning"

I'm glad I bought and listened to this book. Although no gound-swell of wisdom overtook me, the book caused me to think. What else can you really expect these days. Easy listen and well-told.

  • UltraMetabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss

    • ABRIDGED (4 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By Mark Hyman
    • Narrated By Mark Hyman

No wonder it's so hard to lose weight, our bodies are designed to keep weight on at all costs; it's a matter of survival. It's embedded in our DNA. Our diet has changed dramatically over the past ten thousand years, but our genetic blueprint has not, our bodies are not designed to process the types of food we are fed today.

    Jill says: "Ultra Metabolism"
    "No Real News"

Eat right and exercise. Although the author mentions that there is more to the book; that's the essence. The devil is in the details, however. It is the definition of "eating right" with which we struggle. Downloading the book doesn't get you the "lists" that are necessary to actual follow the good doctor's dietary prescription. You might be better off getting this one at the library or buying it at a discount bookstore so you'll have the details you'll need.

  • Inkheart

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Cornelia Funke
    • Narrated By Lynn Redgrave

Imagine it were possible to bring the characters from a book to life. Not like when you listen to an audiobook with such enchantment that the characters seem to jump off the pages and into your bedroom...but for real. Imagine they could actually climb out of the pages and into our world. Then imagine if those characters brought their world into ours.

    Cynthia Lee Reneau says: "EXCELLENT!!"
    "Good Travel Book"

The book helped my 10-year-old easily stay awake through several long drives. The story was captivating and interesting. The language was a bit rough at points but I suppose could be explained because it was the "bad guys" using that language. All in all, a good listen - good enough that I've purchased the sequel for more long drives.

  • Why Do Men Have Nipples?

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Mark Leyner, Billy Goldberg
    • Narrated By Mark Leyner

Finally, answers to all those strange questions you'd like to ask your own doctor but haven't had the guts (or more likely the time) to do so.

Dr. Jim Rudd says: "Can't recommend"
    "Sadly Unfunny"

I never believed I would actually "learn" anything significant from the book; but I DID think it would be humorous. I was right about learning little, but sadly mistaken with regard to humor. These authors (and the publisher) somehow thought it would be interesting for us to read/listen to their little computer "chats." They were wrong. I fortunately wasted only 90 minutes of my life before I stopped and deleted the audio file. Unfortunately, I cannot get that 90 minutes of my life back.

  • Superman Returns

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Marv Wolfman
    • Narrated By Scott Brick

Following a mysterious absence of several years, the Man of Steel comes back to Earth in the epic action-adventure Superman Returns, a soaring new chapter in the saga of one of the world's most beloved superheroes.

    Elliot says: "Superfuous Man"
    "Superfuous Man"

I don't know what I expected from a book based upon the movie. Anyone who's seen the movie has essentially read the book. Although Scott Brick does his normally excellent job of vocalizing the story - the story suffers from the same lack of focus as the movie. The difference? The movie is much shorter. The audiobook does offer some additional detail which is either glossed over or excerpted from the movie, but is hardly worth the additional hours. If you're a Superman fan, you'll listen to the book anyway. If not, the movie will likely fill the void for you.
