While I liked the characters on their own....I just couldn't get into the relationship. I found I didn't care if they got together or not. The best part is the interaction between the Highland Guard guys... But I listened to most of this on double speed. Still moving on to the next in the series because I enjoyed the first 2 books in the series....maybe this book was just a bump in the series road for me.
The story was interesting from the start. I could see how the series was going to be a great one from the moment all the characters were introduced.
Mallory does a great job creating characters that inspire emotions in the reader/listener.
I am not a fan of male narrators for romance novels, so although Perkins does a fine job...just not my favorite.
I loved Sileas from the start and Ian needed a god slap now and then , but don't all Highlanders?
Great start to a superb series! Listen to the series as soon as you can!
I couldn't put this book down. I looked forward to Alex's story and was NOT disappointed. This was a delicious second book in the series "The Return of the Highlanders"
One of the best Highlander series I have listened to so far. Loved it!
I am not a fan of male narrators for romance novels, so Derek Perkins is fine and not a turn off, but not my preference.
Listen to the entire series...it is well worth it!
Fabulous book. So glad to see the return of Ashford McNab...she is the voice of Maiden Lane to me..(even though I was not a fan of her Phoebe lisp)
Elizabeth Hoyt is a masterful writer who knows how to draw in a reader / listener. I didn't want to put it down.
It is strange to say in a Romance book, but the little boy Indigo and his dog Daffodil stole the show in the first half of the book!
I laughed, teared up, had many strong emotions because of this book. If you haven't discovered MAIDEN LANE...you are missing out on one of the best series of all time!
Get it Get it Get it!!!!!
First off....this book could have sucked (but it didn't! ) and I would have listened anyway...because KATE READING COULD READ A PHONE BOOK AND BRING IT TO LIFE! She is the best narrator on the planet. In fact she is the ONLY reason I listened to this book. But I'm so glad I did because.....
Lord of scoundrels is brilliant! I fell in love with Jessica immediately. She is easily in my top 3 heroines of all time. Chase's ability to bring characters to life (with Reading's help of course) is fascinating. This is a totally character driven book. There is a plot and storyline but it all takes a backseat to the dialogues and interactions between Jessica and Dain.
This is one of the best books I have ever listened to. Witty...funny...tragic...heart-wrenching...heartwarming...romantic...sensual...Lord of Scoundrels has everything.
The romantic scenes are steamy and somewhat descriptive but not over the top. They are handled tastefully.
This book is worth a credit...heck it's worth 2!
One aspect of the story line seemed to be well on it's way to development but the rest of the story was really weak. I COULD NOT STAND the narrator's character voices. He has a good regular voice, but he made the hero sound mean and gruff all the time and the heroine sounded like a drag queen.
I listened on double speed. Not impressed.
Yes....I cursed Diana Gabaldon and swore to NEVER listen to another word of her horrid writing when I heard Claire say "I am Claire Randall" I hated Diana for destroying Claire and Jaime...hated her for leaving me with such a longing in my heart at the end of Outlander just to plunge a dirk into it with those words!
Then I collected myself. I thought - SURELY with so many books in the series there is a perfectly logical explanation as to why she is calling herself and her DAUGHTER Randall. The series is about a love story between Claire and Jaime MAINLY so everything would be alright in the end.
I read some reviews here on Audible and other sites and again was thrown into a deep despair. Really? DIA was slow and boring and people actually wanted to skip it? The worst book in the series? How could this be? So I tried to ignore what I had read, reminding myself that poor reviews by other readers did not mean I would not enjoy the book. So I pressed play again.
Yes the first hour or so was heart-wrenching and maybe a bit slow, but once Jaime and Claire were back together all was right with the world again.
DIA is a GREAT book. It isn't Outlander...but it is wonderful. Diana's writing style is unsurpassed. The dialogue and character development and interactions is like no other. DIA is a crucial step in the series and if you really think about it and put yourself in their shoes.... you will see that the actions of the characters and the events play out like they should.
Remember that while this is a Time Travel Historical Romance.....it is still as REAL as it gets. My meaning is that the story isn't all roses and laughter. There are real life issues and struggles along with a passionate love story. It's real. Sometimes real means tough for
the reader to deal with...but I am sure that in the end all will be right with the world of Claire and Jaime.
I can't get over how perfect Davina Porter's narration is. She brings Diana's words to life with perfection. It is a movie (television show) playing out in my head.
In fact she brings it to life so well...I could swear I have already seen the scenes on the STARZ television series, but when I look back I realize those parts haven't been shown on television yet.
In closing - don't read the negative reviews and get discouraged. DIA is an integral part of the series and once you get past the first couple hours you will be enraptured just as I was.
On to Voyager!
This was a much better book than the second. I'm not sure why I listened in reverse order...but I did. I can't NOT finish (or in this case start) a series just because one book isn't wonderful so I listened to Charming the Shrew and was glad I did. It was a good book, easy listening and didn't cause too much emotion one way or the other. Every once in a while I need a nice sweet book to pass the time.
I would say this is SALE worthy for sure, and maybe even credit worthy....its straddling the fence.
This book is the book that I will judge all others against for the rest of my life.
I have a voided time travel books for years now. After starting to watch the Starz series Outlander...I realized the novels must not be quite as time travel oriented as I had once thought.
I feel like a fool for not reading this book sooner.
I just THOUGHT that I have loved books in the past.
The perfect blend of adventure, tragedy, and romance all wrapped up in a true EPIC novel. Ms Gabaldon wraps you up with her writing making you feel the emotions of the characters.
The narration is beyond superb. ...the story was alive in my mind, thanks to Ms Davina Porter's perfection of delivery.
I laughed, cried, swooned, was terrified and even sick to my stomach all in one book.
Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to perfection in a book!
This is a good story...not exceptional...but I truly enjoyed it.
I especially enjoyed the back and forth between Amanda and Hadliegh. They weren't the main couple...but were actually extremely entertaining. I would have enjoyed a story of their own...but not to be! The characters dialogue was entertainng and we'll written.
I'm glad I listened to this story...but it didn't make me think of it for days after I finished it...so it's just a good story.
It was an easy listen and I looked forward to listening to it everytime I could....but I didnt lose sleep or work time to listen.
Get it on sale...it's worth that!
The youngest Sinclair brother Garrett is finally home to marry before the curse destroys Pembroke or more importantly the family fortune is given to the horticultural society.
This book is short...a novella....and I wished it was longer....but i wished all the Pembroke Palace books were longer.
Garrett and Anne are a great couple and super sexy. You won't be disappointed with the romance in this novella.
There is a lot of history revealed in this novella which added some mystery and answered some questions.
Love this series and Love the Sinclair family!
