"Great story, good narration, okay writing"

There are enough fresh plot features in this story to keep you listening despite the simple writing style. It could make a good movie.

On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

There are five attributes to books that I enjoy: (1) personal appeal, (2) an absorbing story, (3) well-developed characters, (4) articulate use of language, and (5) thought provoking nuances. I give one star for each element. This book only had one--personal appeal. It did not appeal to me, however, I know it does to some people because my sons enjoy this type of writing. Their criteria are simply different than mine.

My impression was that Hyperion reads like an outline of a book with what sounds like a mere lists of thoughts, ideas, and events. If subject happens to appeal to you personally, than you still may enjoy it, but I’d recommend listening to the whole sample before you decide to purchase.

Amelia Peabody inherited two things from her father: a considerable fortune and an unbendable will. The first allowed her to indulge in her life's passion. Without the second, the mummy's curse would have made corpses of them all.

Adorable characters, good story (though predictable), and terrific narration make this a very enjoyable "read".

In the mid-70s, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. Born Standing Up is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away".

It was very interesting to hear what Steve Martin went through, and what went through his mind, on his way to becoming the comedian we see on TV. I'm glad he shared his story with us. Of course, the book is nicely written and narrated as well.

Twice Claire has used an ancient stone circle to travel back to the 18th century. The first time she found love with a Scottish warrior but had to return to the 1940s to save their unborn child. The second time, 20 years later, she reunited with her lost love but had to leave behind the daughter that he would never see. Now Brianna, from her 1960s vantage point, has found a disturbing obituary and will risk everything in an attempt to change history.

Oh thank you for offering this unabridged version done by Davin Porter. My hands shook with excitement as I downloaded it. In the previous absence of this audiobook I purchased and read and loved the print version. Seeing this offered on audible today made my day! Yippee!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

I just finished listening to Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, and Voyager. To be fair, that is a very tough act to follow. Pillars of the Earth was okay because of the interesting storyline but had several hard to believe events early on that took me 10 hours of listening to overcome. Eventually I was able to forgive these gaffes and wrap myself around the tale, but not without effort. While a bit disappointed after reading all the rave reviews, Pillars of the Earth was good enough that I may yet purchase World Without End.
