I listen to books all day long. The books I love have great characters. If I give a book 4 or 5 stars, it's worth a listen.

An empty apartment, a missing family, that's creepy. But this is like finding a military base with no one on it. Fighters and tanks idling on the runway with no drivers. This is bad juju. Something wrong happened here. What you should do is tell everyone to leave. The gates have opened the way to a thousand new worlds and the rush to colonize has begun. Settlers looking for a new life stream out from humanity's home planets. Ilus, the first human colony on this vast new frontier, is being born in blood and fire.

What did you like best about Cibola Burn? What did you like least?

I thought the story line was good enough, but changing the narrator changed the characters. They were not changed for the better.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

If you could sum up The Shadow of What Was Lost in three words, what would they be?

Who was your favorite character and why?

    I didn't have a favorite...but the characters are good.

    Any additional comments?

The book is complex. I found myself re-listening to many climatic events. Being as complex as it is...It's well written.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There are many great characters in this book. I don't have a favorite.

    Any additional comments?

The only issue I have with this series is the different races. The discription and significance of the different races isn't clear until you get to the second or third book. The series gets better and better.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Would you try another book from Fred Saberhagen and/or Cynthia Barrett?

I remember reading the first 3 books 20 + years ago... They didn't age well.

Would you be willing to try another book from Fred Saberhagen? Why or why not?

I will probably listen to some of the other books in this series, but not in any hurry to do so.
