Tom Clancy returns to Jack Ryan's early days, in an extraordinary new novel of global political drama. Ryan's first days on the job at the CIA put him into a high-stakes game, playing for the life of the Pope and the stability of the Western world.

"Too many words, too little else"
    Overall

I'm a Tom Clancy fan but this one is just plain boring. It is around 26 hours in length but you have to struggle through 23 hours of rambling and repetition before it gets the least bit interesting. I have the book but could remember very little about it. Now I know why.

  • The Pillars of the Earth

Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

This book should have a special tribute to Murphy. If anything can possible go wrong, it does. It is almost depressing. I enjoy books that are uplifting and make me feel good; this one is the opposite. I'm only about 17 hours into the book and I'm just not sure if I can stick it out.

  • State of Fear

Once again Michael Crichton gives us his trademark combination of page-turning suspense, cutting-edge technology, and extraordinary research. State of Fear is a superb blend of edge-of-your-seat suspense and thought provoking commentary on how information is manipulated in the modern world.

    "As suspected"
    Overall

I always read the reviews, if available, before I download a book. This turned out just like the reviews said it would. If you're an Al Gore fan and believe global warming is confirmed science you will rate this as a single star because you can't go any lower. If you are suspicious of the traditional take on global warming you may actually enjoy this book. My five stars is in part just because the author takes the issue head on.

In Biloxi, Mississippi, a landmark tobacco trial with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake begins routinely, then swerves mysteriously off course. The jury is behaving strangely, and at least one juror is convinced he's being watched...

    "Not his best"
    Overall

I've read most of Grisham's novels and would place Runaway Jury just about at the bottom. Boring.

In the latest from Nelson DeMille (author of The Lion's Game), Paul Brenner is called out of CID retirement to investigate the murder 30 years ago of an army lieutenant in Vietnam. Brenner's trip up country, with a beautiful American expatriate for company, will lead him to uncover an explosive, long-buried secret.

    "Bible Length"
    Overall

The unabridged length of the book was close to 30 hours and I was skeptical if I could endure. The overview looked interesting and I decided to give it a shot. I should have left the book in the undecided category. Too long and too boring.
