Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

If you could sum up A Thousand Splendid Suns in three words, what would they be?

    Deeply moving story

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This is a heart breaking, meaningful and uplifting book. I wanted to finish it but did not want it to end. Beautifully drawn characters who I actually cared about. Courage, strength, human fragility all swirled into modern headlines. Loved it!

Shop Class as Soulcraft brings alive an experience that was once quite common but now seems to be receding from society - the experience of making and fixing things with our hands. For those who felt hustled off to college, then to the cubicle, against their own inclinations and natural bents, Shop Class as Soulcraft seeks to restore the honor of the manual trades as a life worth choosing.

    Absolutely

    Any additional comments?

Very affirming of people who choose to follow their own drummer. Creative and inspiring it made me even more aware of the importance of being true to oneself.

Back on Earth with nothing more to show for his long, strange trip through time and space than a ratty towel and a plastic shopping bag, Arthur Dent is ready to believe that the past eight years were all just a figment of his stressed-out imagination.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

    not really

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Initially clever, the wit became tiresome after awhile and the story seemed never ending. I did not finish it.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    Yes

Did So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish inspire you to do anything?

    No

Russia gains a new tsar, a signal to the world that the imperial Russia is back and plans to have her day. In America, a killer known only as Happy the Baker brutally murders an innocent family and literally flattens the small Midwestern town they once called home. Just a taste, according to the new tsar, of what will happen if America does not back down. Alex Hawke is the only man who can stop the madness.

A User says: "pure masculine entertainment"
    "Preposterous"
    Overall

...and at times ridiculous. Written like a high school boy's fantasey or a bad, made for television, grade B movie. Slow moving in the beginning, full of cliches and completely predictable. If you can suspend your sense of reality and escape into a pure male fantasy it picks up steam in the second part.

Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable and beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys, Amir and Hassan, growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them. When Amir and his father flee the country for a new life in California, Amir thinks that he has escaped his past. And yet he cannot leave the memory of Hassan behind him.

Excellent book, well written and engaging. Some grime moments but worth every minute.

This unprecedented audio project is as thought-provoking as it is mesmeric. The Night Listener is a meditation on the power of voices and the faith we place in them, and an extraordinary audio experience from an American literary icon.

I got a quarter of the way through it and could not finish. One of the few audio books I have deleted without finishing. Gratuitous subject matter and not presented in a particularly interesting or literary way. It does not deserve a star.
