On the treacherous streets of Riverside, a man lives and dies by the sword. Even the nobles on the Hill turn to duels to settle their disputes. Within this elite, dangerous world, Richard St. Vier is the undisputed master, as skilled as he is ruthless--until a death by the sword is met with outrage instead of awe, and the city discovers that the line between hero and villain can be altered in the blink of an eye.

I was excited about the Neil Gaiman production, the talented vocal cast and the "fairy tale for adults." All of that was there, but I did not expect the constant sexual content. Everyone appears to be bisexual and the pace of the novel ceases as every move and glance is described in uncomfortable detail. I found myself skipping forward through half the scenes and finally gave up halfway through.

Disappointing, and I wish a review had tipped me off. It will not be a problem for many, but if detailed sex scenes between men and women or men and men are not what you are looking for, skip this book.

Fun simple story of one man rising from obscurity to help defend earth. Stop there, the next 2 don't really continue the journey much at all.

Book 2 and 3 of this series have been really disappointing. Book 1 was a fun story of one unlikely hero's rise to defend a planet. The latter two pick up fairly uninteresting characters that go almost nowhere, accomplishing almost nothing, while certain details of the first book get wrapped up in a seemingly inevitable way. Quite disappointing.

Now Tyler Vernon and his troops aboard the gigantic battle station Troy face a desperate battle with the forces of galactic tyranny. And the very survival of the Earth and its people is not all that is at stake. The galaxy itself must choose to live free or die - and if the tyrants win this battle, darkness will fall across the galaxy for millennia to come.

There is, sadly, one crucial skip in the audio that leaves you wondering how a crucial fight ended, but I hope Audible fixes that soon. Great ongoing development of interesting characters. Plot constantly moves forward with a great mix of surprises. Brent Weeks is really stepping up!

  • Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

    Story

Seth Grahame-Smith executed his idea well, but the novelty wears off quickly. He weaves together historical-political fiction with the vampire hunting fantasy elements, but it feels at times like there are two story arcs and the vampire hunting arc fizzles about halfway through. Fun read, but it doesn't feel quite complete.

The graphic language used alone is enough to put you on edge, but I was able to tough that one out for the sake of the story. However, the level of detail used when describing the sadistic methods of the story's seedy characters was enough to have me turn this book off. Wish I had known prior to purchasing, so hopefully this warning helps someone out.
