"Why does it have to devolve into soft core porn?"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The story stood fine by itself. I'm not a prude but I don't really want to listen to the way he 'pleasured her with his tongue in the silky folds of skin between her legs' or the way he 'tugged at her erect nipples'.

Would you be willing to try another book from Cat Adams? Why or why not?

I've read or listened to the other series she's written which I enjoyed. At times they became a little more graphic than I prefer but it was a little more integral to the story.

Which character – as performed by Tara Ochs – was your favorite?

I loved the Bobba. The accent was wonderful and her range in ages and well as sexes was quite good.

Could you see Magic's Design being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Maybe. Even though she might be a little older than the character is in the book I think Kate Winslet would be great.

    • By Larry Correia

Now, Joe is at the controls, his gravity-spiking Power at the ready. But that is one huge, mean Demon....

D says: "A Few More Hours"
    "What a tease!"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I love this series and wish there were more! The time was well spent but short.

What other book might you compare Tokyo Raider to and why?

I can only really compare them to the others in the series. Because I've listened to them all I don't know if it would make sense to others who have not listened to the others.

Have you listened to any of Bronson Pinchot’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Bronson Pinchot is the reason I looked at this series. His narration of the 'President's Vampire' series showed me what a great talent he is.

Could you see Tokyo Raider being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not really. It's more of a novella than a full length story.

  • Classical Mythology

    • ORIGINAL (12 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By The Great Courses
    • Narrated By Professor Elizabeth Vandiver

These 24 lectures are a vibrant introduction to the primary characters and most important stories of classical Greek and Roman mythology. Among those you'll investigate are the accounts of the creation of the world in Hesiod's Theogony and Ovid's Metamorphoses; the gods Zeus, Apollo, Demeter, Persephone, Hermes, Dionysos, and Aphrodite; the Greek heroes, Theseus and Heracles (Hercules in the Roman version); and the most famous of all classical myths, the Trojan War.

Matt says: "Very Informative and Entertaining"
"An 'Audible Daily Deal' that is a true WINNER!"
If you could sum up Classical Mythology in three words, what would they be?

Comedy. Tragedy. Exciting. Thanks to Professor Vandiver these are all brought to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The lecturer. She kept things moving and made me excited for the next lecture.

What about Professor Elizabeth Vandiver’s performance did you like?

Great timing. Knows when enough is enough and moves on.

    Any additional comments?

Listening to these lectures made me want to buy more.

  • The Book of Life: All Souls, Book 3

    • UNABRIDGED (23 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By Deborah Harkness
    • Narrated By Jennifer Ikeda
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

After traveling through time in Shadow of Night, the second book in Deborah Harkness's enchanting series, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to face new crises and old enemies. At Matthew's ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches - with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency.

Loren says: "too many loose threads in this weaving"
"The story is good but the performance is great!"
What made the experience of listening to The Book of Life the most enjoyable?

I am amazed at the range of the narrator. Every character has a distinct personality. This helps to keep all the characters easy to follow. There is sympathy for every character no matter how corrupt they are.

What other book might you compare The Book of Life to and why?

I'm a fan of Lynn Flewelling's books. She is able to describe sexual situations that don't make me uncomfortable. I hate when I start hearing 'he bit my erect nipples', 'slipped his hands into my wetness'...blah, blah, blah. Both Flewelling and Harper let me use my imagination.

Have you listened to any of Jennifer Ikeda’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not, but I certainly intend to. The only other actor that I can always count on a good performance from is Bronson Pinchot.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Book of Life - Science, Magic and Mystery bound in one book.

  • Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Christopher Moore
    • Narrated By Susan Bennett

A striking red-head, 20-something Jody is attacked and transformed into a vampire while walking home one night in downtown San Francisco. Befriending 19-year-old Tommy, Jody tries to understand her new undead life, but trouble finds her when the cops start suspecting Tommy of being a local bloodsucking serial killer.

    SHEILA says: "Bloodsucking FUN!"
    "Gay men aren't lisping queens!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The story was a little whiny at times. The portrayal of the gay men in the story as nelly, lisping queens ruined any story line. That was a total producer/narrator decision. If I'd read the book I don't think it would have been nearly as offensive.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting part of the story to me was the idea that some changes that seem extreme don't really change who you are. It was a nice bit of psychology. The least interesting part was the whining by the boyfriend.

What didn’t you like about Susan Bennett’s performance?

She had a decent range of characters but, as stated earlier, the image of the lisping, bitchy queen was too much.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

The book itself didn't really spark much. Any anger that was felt was for the performance.

    Any additional comments?

I don't usually return a book but this one (even at the discounted price) was not worth the disappointment I felt.

  • Blood Bond: Anna Strong, Vampire, Book 9

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 16 mins)
    • By Jeanne C. Stein
    • Narrated By Dina Pearlman
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

As a vampire, Anna Strong has an immortal life...but now she’s running out of time. Anna’s relationship with shape-shifter Daniel Frey has given her hope for a future with him and his son - especially when Frey proposes.… But just when Anna starts to think her life couldn’t be better, she must fly to France to be at the side of her dying mother. There she learns that not every vampire accepts her Chosen One status. And one such vamp is about to go rogue - by leading his followers in a fight to usurp humanity….

Diane Rivers says: "Ode to Anna"
"WTF? When did this turn into soft porn?"
What did you like best about Blood Bond? What did you like least?

I thoroughly enjoyed the first few books. But as the series has progressed it's turned into soft porn. It seems as though the sex scenes are just filler at this point. It doesn't progress the story at all. I don't know if I would purchase the next book in the series.

What could Jeanne C. Stein have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

More story and less descriptions of Anna's sexual pleasures.

What about Dina Pearlman’s performance did you like?

Dina Pearlman's range in voice and character is amazing. Each character is distinctive and unique.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Not this book but perhaps the earlier in the series.

    Any additional comments?

I like the addition of Vlad.

  • Casket of Souls: Nightrunner, Book 6

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 7 mins)
    • By Lynn Flewelling
    • Narrated By Adam Danoff
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Nightrunners are back in this gripping novel full of Lynn Flewelling’s trademark action, intrigue, and richly imagined characters. More than the dissolute noblemen they appear to be, Alec and Seregil are skillful spies, dedicated to serving queen and country. But when they stumble across evidence of a plot pitting Queen Phoria against Princess Klia, the two Nightrunners will find their loyalties torn as never before.

Watercolourist says: "Seregil and Alec are back."
    "Seregil and Alec are back."
What did you love best about Casket of Souls?

I have to admit I was glad to see Alec and Seregil back to their old selves. While I appreciated the addition of Sebrahn 'he' was a little bit of a distraction. I fell in love with the series because I appreciate having a gay/bi character that isn't an effeminate mess.

Which character – as performed by Adam Danoff – was your favorite?

His voice was made for Alec. Some of the more mature characters tend to sound a little young.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The description of the feelings by Alec surrounding the deaths of friends was especially touching. The author didn't have to go into sappy cliches to make the point.

    Any additional comments?

PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Pick ONE pronunciation of the names and stick with it. I've noticed in other audio books that when a new narrator takes over that the pronunciation of certain names can change but this is not Danoff's first reading of this. Whoever is the producer on these needs to figure it out.
