Would you consider the audio edition of Laidlaw to be better than the print version?

For me audio is always better than print.

What other book might you compare Laidlaw to and why?

Girl With The Dragon Tattoo--both are first in their respective parts of the country.

Which character – as performed by William McIlvanney – was your favorite?

    Laidlaw

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, but it was a book I immediately listened to a second time.

    Any additional comments?

I am desperate for the other two of this trilogy to be put on Audio....hopefully with the author reading them.

Mick Malone is determined to thwart international cybercrime. He accepts an internship in Scotland for his last semester of college only to discover a good old-fashioned murder waiting for him. Hooking up with Chief Constable Jock McDuff, who is deeply entrenched in traditional Highlands Constabulary procedure, Mick learns the ins and outs of plain, feet-on-the-street detective work. But when the mystery threatens his own family, Mick has to take the lead to save the day.

If you could sum up The Mystery of Glengarron in three words, what would they be?

The story and characters are charming.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Mystery of Glengarron?

It's not a book with startling episodes.

What about Patrick Peterson’s performance did you like?

He seems genuine and sincere. His accents need practice.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No

    Any additional comments?

I would read subsequent books in this series and hope Audible acquires them.

    the performance was fine,

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

  • Walking into the Ocean: A Peter Cammon Mystery, Book 1

Introducing veteran Scotland Yard Chief Inspector Peter Cammon, this novel finds Cammon journeying to the Jurassic Coast to solve a seemingly ordinary domestic crime. At first glance, the perpetrator appears to have murdered his wife before drowning in the English Channel, but Cammon soon learns that his case is merely a sideshow. A broader series of murders has been unfolding along the cliffs, baffling the local police.

Would you try another book from David Whellams and/or Gerard Doyle?

Mr. Doyle, absolutely; Mr. Whellams, not a chance.

Would you ever listen to anything by David Whellams again?

    No

Have you listened to any of Gerard Doyle’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Yes, he's a fine narrator./reader/performer.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Walking into the Ocean?

This book needed a strong editor with a lot of red ink. The lead character was not developed in any meaningful way. Instead he seemed to be a sexist, simple-minded git whose proclivity for secrecy was responsible for several deaths. I think the local chief of police was on the right track to insist the dolt be called back to London.

  • The Fire Dance: Inspector Irene Huss, Book 6

Detective Inspector Irene Huss hasn't seen Sophie Malmborg for over 15 years, but she's still haunted by the strange young ballerina's role in the fire that killed her stepfather. Why had she refused to speak to Irene and the other case workers? Could an 11-year-old - even one as disturbed and aloof as Sophie - truly be capable of setting her own house on fire? Irene's questions resurface 15 years later, when Sophie disappears and the charred remains of a dancer are found in an abandoned warehouse. Irene has a startling realization that could shed light on the case that has been lingering in the back of her mind since the beginning of her career.

What did you like best about The Fire Dance? What did you like least?

The new characters were wooden and unsympathetic. The old characters did not grow or develop but seemed stuck in cliches.

What was most disappointing about Helene Tursten’s story?

No character development and the story was weak.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narrator sounded as if she were reading it for the first time.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

Seems to me this author needs to find a new, strong editor who can red-line uninteresting prose and send the author back to the drawing board, so to speak. I doubt I will be revisiting Irene Huss again.
