  • Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution - and How It Can Renew America

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs)
    • By Thomas L. Friedman
    • Narrated By Oliver Wyman

Friedman brings a fresh outlook to the crises of destabilizing climate change and rising competition for energy - both of which could poison our world if we do not act quickly and collectively. His argument speaks to all of us who are concerned about the state of America in the global future.

Sean says: "Long, Flat, and Boring"
    "Preachy and not scientific enough"

Although I agree with almost all of the points in this book, I think it was very poorly written and edited even worse. A book like this should have some repetition and variation on a theme, but there are limits, and this one is vastly over quota.

It really felt like the conclusion came first, and then he went looking for supportive data. For a subject this important, it has to happen the other way.

  • The Art of Asking: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Amanda Palmer, Brené Brown (foreword)
    • Narrated By Amanda Palmer

In The Art of Asking, Palmer expands upon her popular TED talk to reveal how ordinary people, those of us without thousands of Twitter followers and adoring fans, can use her principles in our own lives to "let people help".

Matthew says: "Love the book. Palmer reads and sings here!"
    "Inspiring, riveting and deeply emotional."

I loved this book so much, and will re-listen regularly. How can anyone not love and admire such an honest, open and beautiful person?

  • Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By John Scalzi
    • Narrated By Wil Wheaton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

    Paige says: "Not his Wheal-house"
    "Extremely entertaining!"
What made the experience of listening to Redshirts the most enjoyable?

If I could do nothing in life except listen to books written by John Scalzi as narrated by Wil Wheaton, I'd do that. The duo make for entertainment and love of the genre that I've not experienced in the hundreds of other books I've read and listened to. I can't recommend this highly enough!

What other book might you compare Redshirts to and why?

Hard to compare this book to any other, except others by Scalzi. It's sort of tongue-in-cheek inside humor in a Science-Fiction - Action/Adventure.

Which character – as performed by Wil Wheaton – was your favorite?

Hard to single out a character - since he does them all so well. Not over the top with accents and such, just really gets to the heart of the character. You can really see things through their eyes. And yet, the fact that it's Wil Wheaton with his work on Star Trek, Eureka, Big Bang Theory, etc adds an extra layer of just what Scalzi is going for.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It would have been great to listen all at once, and I certainly sat in the car listening when I should have gone into the store, into work, etc.

  • Live Free or Die: Troy Rising, Book One

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By John Ringo
    • Narrated By Mark Boyett
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When aliens trundled a gate to other worlds into the solar system, the world reacted with awe, hope and fear. But the first aliens to come through, the Glatun, were peaceful traders and the world breathed a sigh of relief.

Amazon Customer says: "Republican Physicists in Space!!!"

This is such an awesome story! I thought I'd give it a try, since I was not familiar with the author. Half way through listening to book 1, I bought books 2 and 3, and I don't want to go to work - I just want to finish listening!

I'll certainly be checking out John's other books. He has a great way of blending action, characters, and plot. Also, I love the references to BSG and Star Wars - Frakkin cool.
