As a Mennonite in the Fresno area, I hardly recognized my community in this book. I'm 25 years older than the author (whose family I know) and didn't suffer the deprivations she describes. There's a whole lot of literary license going on here. So I say, go ahead, listen to the book and enjoy it, but keep that grain of salt firmly in place.
A bigger disappointment for me was the mispronunciation of so very many words by the reader. I was under the impression that readers or producers checked with the author re pronunciations. Guess I was wrong.
The premise is cute, but the book failed to deliver. Too long and too preposterous.
What a great well-written book. Such a gentle read. As someone with an OCD person in the family, I appreciated the kind look into the disorder, wrapped up in a cute fictional story.
I loved it! And the narrator was perfect. Highly recommended. Unless you are a reader who demands "Bang Bang Shoot 'em up" to hold your attention, you will like this book.
Who wants to spend this much time with such unlikeable people? I couldn't wait for this book to end.
This is my go-to series when I need something light between heavy books. Always enjoyable. This was a particularly good one. But if you are a first time reader of this series, start with Book 1.
These are not likable people, however, the book is very well written and very well narrated. You find yourself cheering for the children of this odd couple to succeed in life in spite of their parents.
Not quite a humor book, not quite a romance, not quite a mystery, but a little of all of that.
This book grew on me. It was an interesting look into a country we don't often hear anything about. I mostly liked it.
This book wasn't quite what I expected, but I think I liked it. Yes, I liked it. I still can't decide if I liked the reader. Well, if you were reading in the voice of Death, what would you sound like? OK, he did a good job.
I guess I don't like stories with sad endings. And the characters weren't fleshed out enough for me. Good idea, but just didn't quite get there.
An easy to listen to book. The author has a good sense of humor and an obvious love of animals. A good choice when you want something low key in between intense books.
