I was surprised at how good this book is. I listened to it a month or so back and have been thinking about it off and on. The characters are nicely developed and the story sticks with you. This is a very good book and the narration was well done.
These two gentlemen are very good at presenting the divine comedy in such a way that you see things in a new light.
Listen to the actual book, or read it, then listen to this book, then listen to, to read again... this adds a lot of depth to the experience of 'The Divine Comedy'
Where does this one rank? Well, it is not my all time favorite, but it certainly is right up there with the top books.
I like the way the book flows. You are on a journey and if you pay attention to Dante, you can see the transformation that takes place as he moves through the poem. He grows and he finally gets it.
I have listened to many books narrated by Grover Gardner. He is outstanding. Mr Gardner is one of the few narrators that I have seen listed as the narrator on a book that I was a little 'iffy' about purchasing, that seeing him listed has made me decide to get the book anyway. I have never been anything less than delighted with his narrations.
GET THIS BOOK!
This book is amazing. It is very well written, it keeps your attention from start to finish and you become involved with the characters. John Lee, of course, does an outstanding job narrating the book.
I would compare this to World without end and pillars of the earth.
John Lee is very clear and concise in his narration. He brings a life to the characters using his own style to do so. Everything about his narration compels you to listen.
I love the books 'Pillars of the earth', and 'World without end'. I really thought he would have a tough time coming close to writing a book anywhere near as good as these. But, he did it! Fall of Giants is an excellent book and I can't wait for the others in this trilogy to come out! This, (and the other two mentioned here) are must have books for everyones library!
This is a delightful book that will capture you from the very beginning! The book is very well written and the narrator does an excellent job bringing the characters to life. You really, really, really should give this one a listen. You will be glad you did!
Stephen King is one of my favorite authors. This book, although good, does not do the dark tower series justice. The story is okay, it just feels a little too different than the others in the dark tower series. Get the book, it is worth the listen, but if you have not heard any of the other books in the dark tower series, please do not make any assumptions about them based on this book. The Dark Tower series is outstanding and I think everyone should read or listen to it. One other thing, Mr. King narrated Bag of Bones, Needful Things, and other books that were just fine. However, you can not create a series like this one, have it narrated by two other men with the voices they have and then write a book to go in the middle of the series and narrate it yourself! It is not that you are a bad narrator, you are okay at it, but George Guidell and Frank Muller are seasoned narrators with deep powerful voices. I am very sorry Mr. King, your books are excellent, but the choice to read this one yourself was a mistake. If it was re-released, with George Guidell or Frank Muller reading it, I would buy the book again and see if it changed my overall rating much.
I love this story. I have seen many versions of the play and have read the book. Of course there are a few versions of this story that appear on TV every year. This book can certainly hold its own with other versions, and other media. Well worth a listen.
This book is a classic. As a child, like most boys, I sometimes wondered about life on a deserted island. The adventures would be awesome! I think those daydreams were closer to "The Wonderful World of Disney" daydreams. This book is probably much closer to the reality of being stranded on an island. Its a good book and worth your time to listen to it. The author narrates this book and he really should stick to writing and leave narration to others, but he does okay. It takes a little to get past this, so stick with him and give it a listen.
The gold coast was excellent, Wildfire was haunting, yet outstanding, the lions game was riveting, but The Lion tops them all! Nelson DeMille has become my favorite author. I have listened to seven of his books so far and they were all excellent! I highly recommend anything written by this author. The Lion is my favorite though. It can easily stand alone, but I recommend you listen to the lions game first, then the lion. The narration??? Well, Scott Brick is certainly one of the best!
