After backpacking her way around Europe journalist Sarah Turnbull is ready to embark on one last adventure before heading home to Sydney. A chance meeting with a charming Frenchman in Bucharest changes her travel plans forever. Acting on impulse, she agrees to visit Fredric in Paris for a week. Put a very French Frenchman together with a strong-willed Australian girl and the result is some spectacular - and often hilarious - cultural clashes.

Van Diemen's Land was an island of stark contrasts; a harsh penal colony, an English idyll for its landed gentry, and an island so rich in natural resources it was a profiteer's paradise. Its capital Hobart Town had its contrasts too; the wealthy elite in their sandstone mansions, the exploited poor in the notorious slum known as Wapping, and the criminals and villains who haunted the dockside taverns and brothels of Sullivan's Cove.

Living the good life in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales with her husband, four grown-up children and four (and counting) grandchildren, Mary Moody's life was full. The only thing missing was time for herself, a chance to reflect on life and its meaning. Like many women of her generation, caught up with the commitments of work and family, Mary had never had a moment alone - so she decided to say au revoir. She ran away to live on her own for six glorious months in the rural paradise of southwest France.

Frances Mayes - widely published poet, gourmet cook, and travel writer - opens the door to a wondrous new world when she buys and restores an abandoned villa in the spectacular Tuscan countryside. In sensuous and evocative language, she brings the reader along as she discovers the beauty and simplicity of life in Italy. Also available: Bella Tuscany.

    Story
Would you try another book from Frances Mayes and/or Frances Mayes?

It is not the story it is the voice of the narrator. Very droll and very hard to listen to.

Has Under the Tuscan Sun turned you off from other books in this genre?

I was looking forward to this book as I had heard so much about it.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her mono tone southern accent put me off. I tried a couple of time to listen again, but terribly sorry I couldn't cope with her voice.

What character would you cut from Under the Tuscan Sun?

could listen to much so missed out on the book

    Any additional comments?

    No thanks for your time
