"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." So begins this classic, one of the most beloved novels of all time. Charles Dickens brings the French Revolution to life through such vivid characters as Charles Darnay, the Old Doctor, Sydney Carton and Lucy Manette. The action peaks with the storming of the Bastille, the dreaded symbol of government authority. And the blade of La Guillotine falls again...

Amazon Customer says: "Absolute literature...and a page turner at that!"
"A Brilliant Book and a Fantastic Recording"
    Overall

The Book: Dickens is a master with prose. If you have a love of classic literature you will not be disappointed. If you are new to Dickens, you may find his verbose style overwhelming. He tends to use 15 words when he could use 2, but brilliant words they all are. When you find yourself getting lost in yet another long narrative, just sit back and relax, let the fabulous language wash over you.

The Recording: Brilliant! Frank Muller is fabulous.

This is a Harlequin romance novel. It's a cheesy romance novel that is all about the relationship. If you like those kind of books, you'll like this one, it's one of the better ones. If you don't like 'em, don't buy the book or write a review that says it's "all about a normal [yawn] relationship." Yeah, it is. And if you like THOSE kind of books, you'll enjoy this one. She's a normal girl with spunk who meets a dream guy. He also happens to be loaded with cash. She gets knocked up (hence the title) and, like all good Harlequin novel's, the author delivers a happy ending. Pure cheesy romance. I love it!

Lady Emma Wells-Finch comes to Texas on a mission: she has two weeks to ruin her reputation. The only thing that will save her from losing everything is complete and utter disgrace. World famous playboy-athlete Kenny Traveler has been blackmailed into chauffeuring Lady Emma around. He needs to prove himself completely respectable to get back into his game. And when a gorgeous man who can't afford another scandal meets a hardheaded woman who's determined to cause one, anything can happen...even love.

    Pat says: "Delightful"
"If you can Get Past the Narrator..."
    Overall

... this is another entertaining book by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. The narrator is obviously much older than the character and that is a bit off-putting. Also, the character Lady Emma isn't a bit like any of my in-laws or the hundreds of British citizens I know -- she's more of a bad stereo-type. But that doesn't take away from the super entertaining story.

  • An Open Heart: Practicing Compassion in Everyday Life

When His Holiness the Dalai Lama came to New York City in 1999, he spoke simply and powerfully on the everyday Buddhist practice of compassion. An Open Heart lays out this course of meditation, from the simplest to the most challenging, describing the mental training techniques that will enable anyone of any faith to change their minds and open their hearts. Featuring an afterword by Richard Gere.

Chris says: "I purchased _An Open Heart_,"
    "Compassionate but Dry"
    Overall

AN OPEN HEART is based on the Dalai Lama's 1999 US lectures and is accessible and grounded. The Dalai Lama looks at how to live ethically and with compassion in an often chaotic and negative world. The Dalai Lama's insight, wisdom, and guidelines for 'centered' living and meditation make this interesting, especially as I am not a Buddhist myself. It's perfect for bedside listening as it tends to be a bit dry and the narration is rather monotone as well. However, it makes a nice way to drift off to sleep.

Best-selling author Lemony Snicket (a.k.a. Daniel Handler) recently spoke with Beth Anderson, Audible's publisher, about A Series of Unfortunate Events. He talked about his experience narrating audiobooks, as well as his participation in the movie. You'll hear about his favorite authors and musicians and learn more about the Baudelaire orphans. Whether you are a die-hard fan or new to this fantastically grim and gripping series, this dire dialogue will make you marvelously miserable.

    Emily says: "Very enjoyable!"
"Interesting interview, but poor quality recording"
    Overall

This interview was interesting. I found the interviewer to be both skilled and personable, which often makes all the difference in an interview. Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket) is just as interesting as you would imagine. However, it sounds as if he is phoning into this interview and the sound quality reflects this; still worth your time.

This interview was thoroughly interesting. I found Anna Quindlen to be both intelligent and engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview, and have decided to get the book by Anna Quindlen "A Short Guide to a Happy Life" because of it. At only 16 minutes, you can't go wrong.

This interview is a bit dated, as the participants sometimes discuss coming events that have now already passed. However, the interview gives you a good feel for the style of David Maraniss and some interesting information about Al Gore. Not bad for the price. :-)

Strength: I enjoy hearing authors talk about how they write their novels. Stephen King is very informative and interesting as he discusses writing the novel Bag of Bones and audiobooks in general.

Weakness: If you haven't read (or listened) to the novel yet and plan to, there may be spoilers, listener beware! I also have to agree with another reviewer:

YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE THIS INTERVIEW. If you purchased Bag of Bones and have not yet listened to it thoroughly, this interview is at the end of that book.

Even four years after the sudden death of his wife, best selling novelist Mike Noonan can't stop grieving, nor can he return to his writing. He moves into his isolated house by the lake, which becomes the site of ghostly visitations, ever-escalating nightmares, and the sudden recovery of his writing ability. What are the forces that have been unleashed here - and what do they want of Mike Noonan?

Amazon Customer says: "My Favorite King Novel"
"Say what you will, the recording is fabulous!"
    Overall

Stephen King goes gothic. It is also, as far as I know, the first time this author has attempted to write a romance. Of course, don't expect anything close to Harlequin. For one, it's about a million times longer. King tends to go on a bit when he doesn't need to. However, if you are a King fan you probably won't be too disappointed.

Recording: I found the best part of this book, by far, was the recording. King reads this himself, which means he knows exactly what it should sound like. He has also used music to enhance several areas of the novel.

Weakness: This isn't an edge of your seat book. It starts slow and never takes on a breakneck pace.

This is a book for people who enjoy a slow-paced ghost story that takes advantage of a remote and spooky environment.

Goldie Hawn's life is an ongoing tableau of stories, and she has a born knack for telling them. In this candid and insightful book, Goldie invites us to join her in a look back at the people, places, and events that have touched her. It is the spiritual journey of a heart in search of enlightenment.

Terri says: "A Lotus Grows in the Mud"
    "Surprisingly, its refreshing and good."
    Overall

I'm not a big Goldie Hawn fan, but this book was surprisingly good. Ms. Hawn's honesty with herself and her readers is refreshing. I was also surprised about the spiritual aspects of the book.

Strength: Ms. Hawn has a great capacity for love and thankfulness for the people in her life. I found it heartwarming.

Weakness: Ms. Hawn does not follow chronological order, leaving me a bit confused a few times. However this may be due to the fact that this is an abridged version of her book.

Recording: Ms. Hawn narrates this book herself, giving the recording an intimate feeling.
