Absolutely hated this book. Way too much flowery language; pointless story lines; the whole book could have been cut down to about 30 minutes! UGH
This is my first really negative review but I had to write it. This was more a story about the politics and bureaucracy that doctors have to deal with. The narrator was horrible. He sounded like he was reading with gum or a lifesaver in his mouth. Don't waste the credit.
Finally, a great story, well-narrated, without any of the profanity found in most books/movies today.
A very good story but couldn't finish it because of all the profanity - especially the use of the Lord's name. Don't know why an author would need to use those words so heavily. They are definitely not necessary for the story at all. Just wanted to warn everyone.
It took me a little while to "get into" this book, but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Great story with lots of twists. Perfect narrators.
I am (was) a big Jack Reacher fan, but Dick Hill is getting too old to play a big, strong, tough-guy. His voice makes Reacher sound like a 75 year old. I listened to it on 1.25 speed and that helped, but the believability of the story is ruined by the narration. Sorry Mr. Hill. You are a talented guy, but it's time to move on to other characters.
Parts of the book were good, but I kept waiting to see how it was all going to come together and it never did. Strange, strange, story. Could have been 3 separate books. The narrator was very good but I wouldn't waste a credit on the book. Absolutely ridiculous ending.
The narrator was terrific. The story was full of unexpected twists and turns. I'll be looking for others by this author.
I've listened to more than 150 books, but I have never listened to one where I appreciated the talent of the narrator tremendously but disliked the story more. Because of the other reviews, I kept waiting for the story to get better. It didn't. The ending was the worst. Claire Dane's narration was the only good thing about it.
I like true stories and found Greg Mortenson's to be inspiring at first. I did learn a great deal about the cultures in Pakistan and Afghanistan, but was put off by a sort of anti-American turn the book takes near the end. It's not one I would recommend to my friends.
Really enjoyed all the twists and turns of the plot. Very believable. Glad I bought it.
