A New York Times best-selling author and multiple Bram Stoker Award winner, Marvel Comics writer Jonathan Maberry continues the story he began in Rot and Ruin. Six months have passed since Benny Imura and Nix Riley learned that flesh-eating zombies aren’t the scariest or most dangerous monsters around. Now, Benny’s brother Tom is training them in the art of zombie whacking. But as they plan to leave and find a better future, a zombie attack puts a crimp in their plans.

What was most disappointing about Jonathan Maberry’s story?

I was not happy with the slowness of the story development. Although the story line had potential, the author kept having the lead characters make dumb mistakes during times of crisis!

Someone wants to kill Mari, a young steam mechanic in the guild that controls all technology. She has learned that her world of Dematr is headed for a catastrophe that will destroy civilization and that mages really can alter reality for short periods. Someone also wants to kill Alain, a young mage who has learned that mechanics are not frauds, as his guild teaches, and that mechanic Mari is the only person who can prevent the oncoming disaster.

    Story

The heroine is a strong woman, which to my liking. However, this book is somewhat slow. I suspect the author is trying to fill the pages with words that do nothing for the story, but allows for the necessity of another book in the series. Additionally, and more disconcerting is the constant romantic aspect that pervades an otherwise good story line.

Having said the above, I will be waiting for the next book in the series.

A remorseless ranger. A sentient hell hound pelt with a penchant for pyromania. An irksome pixie who sells intrigue and information. Three companions who find themselves trapped in a city filled with warring priestly factions, devious machinations, and an angry fiend. To save the city, they must find three weapons of power, which lie in the most trap-laden, monster-infested place this side of Acererak's tomb: White Plume Mountain.

Would you try another book from Paul Kidd and/or Bernard Setaro Clark?

While I enjoyed the "potential" of the story, I did not care for, in my opinion, the quirky way the author presented the material.

But the security of a people can vanish in a heartbeat, for wolves are often drawn to fields filled with fattened sheep. Bridei is determined to drive the Gaelic invaders from his lands once and for all. And so, with his land secure and his house in order, he prepares for war. One of Bridei's plans to win the war to come involves the beautiful young Ana. A princess of the Light Isles, she has dwelt as a hostage at the court of Fortriu for most of her young life.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I enjoy the magical realm in books, and like strong women/men who fight for what is right. I was very disappoined in this book, given I felt it was very slow to develop, and very little magical moments. Most of the book was given over to romance, not what I wanted to read, albeit, the story line was interesting, barring the hours of romantic and convoluted personal relationships.

If the author would focus on the story line, it would have been a great book. However, the story facilated between philosophy, romance, with an emphasis on the hero trying to be less. Bummer!

A lot of introspection, and painfully slow. A lot of potential, only if the author can get a grip on the story. The reader had a sing song presentation which I did not care like.

The once-utopian Chasm City - a domed human settlement on an otherwise inhospitable planet---has been overrun by a virus known as the Melding Plague, capable of infecting any body, organic or computerized. Now, with the entire city corrupted - from the people to the very buildings they inhabit---only the most wretched sort of existence remains. The stakes are raised when Tanner Mirabel's search brings him face to face with a centuries-old atrocity that history would rather forget.

What did you like best about Chasm City? What did you like least?

I did not enjoy this book, mainly because I prefer a linear story. This one, with it's flashbacks, and converging story lines was confusing to me, and tiring. However, someone with a more agile mind may enjoy it. ;-)

What did you like best about Silver Moons, Black Steel? What did you like least?

I started reading and enjoying this series with the first three books. I enjoy science fiction and strong women, which was both indicated in the first three books.

For some reason, the author has changed the lead character, making her weak, indecisive, and unable to defend herself. Not what I was hoping for, nor expecting. I did not read book four because of the reviews, but thought this book would get back on track. Not so.

As it turned out, this was basically a love story, and not a science fiction, nor a strong woman.

Spearpoint, the last human city, is an atmosphere-piercing spire of vast size. Clinging to its skin are the zones, a series of semi-autonomous city-states, each of which enjoys a different---and rigidly enforced---level of technology. Following an infiltration mission that went tragically wrong, Quillon has been living incognito, working as a pathologist in the district morgue.

Seventeen years ago, a long and bloody rebellion wracked the six united regions of the Kingdom. Now the new King wields the vast and unvanquished army of Midlan with his right hand, and with his left has granted a small group of thugs, the nobles he calls his Sovereign Five, unbridled rule over the other regions. As if this weren't bad enough, the King has also outlawed the practice of whispering - which is a problem for Kael.

Why do author's take the lead hero, give superpowers, and then have them whine about using them, or fail to use the powers given until the last moment. The story line had great potential, so I listened to the next book hoping the hero would step up. Some use of his powers, maybe the third book! If I decide to continue.
